Keanu Reeves, full name Keanu Reeves Charles Reeves (born September 2, 1964 in Beirut, Lebanon) is a Canadian actor best known for his work in comedy, science fiction, and action films.
Reeves’ mother was a costume designer and performer from England, and his father was a Hawaiian geologist. When he was a child, his parents divorced, and he moved in with his mother. The family first relocated to Sydney, then to New York City, and finally to Toronto, where Reeves was raised. He struggled in school and attended four different high schools, one of which was arts-focused, before leaving to pursue a career as an actor. His first professional appearance was in an episode of the comedy series Hangin’ In, which aired in 1984.
Reeves made his film debut as a hockey player in Youngblood (1986), a film set in the world of junior hockey in Canada, after appearing in several TV movies and shows. Later that year, he rose to prominence for his roles as a disaffected teen in the bleak drama River’s Edge and as the son of an alcoholic father (Andy Griffith) in the TV film Under the Influence. Over the next two years, Reeves appeared in several films, most notably Dangerous Liaisons (1988), before starring in the slacker comedy Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989), about two high-school students who time-travel for a history project. The film was an unexpected and long-lasting success. Later that year, Reeves appeared in Ron Howard’s Parenthood.
Following his role as Ted in the 1990 animated series Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures, Reeves appeared in three films in 1991, playing an FBI agent in Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break, a male prostitute in Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho, which also starred River Phoenix, and reprising his role as Ted in the sequel Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. Later in his career, he appeared in Kenneth Branagh’s Much Ado About Nothing (1993). Before playing a bomb expert in Speed, Reeves had a string of underwhelming roles (1994). The thriller was a smash hit, and it catapulted him to stardom.
Other notable roles include Siddhartha Gautama in Little Buddha, Scott Favor in the drama My Own Private Idaho opposite River Phoenix, Johnny Mnemonic in the sci-fi film Johnny Mnemonic opposite Dolph Lundgren, Kevin Lomax in the supernatural thriller The Devil’s Advocate opposite Al Pacino, and the chevalier Danceny in Dangerous Liaisons.
During the 1990s, he was a member of the grunge band Dogstar, and more recently, Becky. In a 2006 ET online poll, he was named one of the “Top Ten of America’s Favorite Stars.” Reeves was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on January 31, 2005.
