Kazuo Ishiguro Bio

British author Kazuo Ishiguro was born in Nagasaki, Japan on November 8, 1954. After graduating with a BA in 1978 from the University of Kent, Ishiguro went on to get an MA in 1980 from the University of East Anglia. He recently relocated to London.

Ishiguro’s writing style is highly unusual in the standard canon of English literature. This is mostly owing to the plot’s jumbled chronology, the narrator’s high subjectivity, and the narrative’s sensitivity to detail and accuracy in historical context. These traits stand in stark contrast to the received literary wisdom, which holds that the best writing in English is characterized by succinct descriptions, chronological order, and objective narration.

Kazuo Ishiguro writes historical fiction, period. Set between the end of World War I and the start of World War II in 1939, his novel The Remains of the Day is set on the sprawling country estate of an aristocratic lord. The depth and accuracy of the research are exceptional, and the author captures the emotional climate of the time period with a deftness that is rarely seen in works of historical fiction. The atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Japan, and the subsequent restoration of the city are the subject of the events of the novel An Artist of the Floating World. This time around, Ishiguro draws from his own life for both the story and the historical context; he was born in Nagasaki in 1954, just a year or two after the events of the novel.

The novels are written in the first person, and Ishiguro allows the narrators to reflect the whole range of human prejudices. His protagonists frequently ignore or deny facts that the reader learns about through the actions, if not the thinking, of the protagonist. In The Remains of the Day, the butler Stephens faces this conflict when he is torn between his duty and the temptation of love. Ishiguro places genuine historical figures prominently in his writing and often uses them as protagonists or secondary characters. Lord Darlington, the hero’s boss in The Remains of the Day, was a real figure who actually existed in England before World War II, as were many of the dignitaries the protagonist hosts and entertains.

The climax of his novels is a paradox. The troubles his characters face have their roots in the past and can never be fixed. As a result, many of Ishiguro’s works conclude with a mood of gloomy resignation, in which the protagonists finally come to terms with what has happened to them and who they have become. Kazuo Ishiguro is widely regarded as one of the best writers from the United Kingdom. He has been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize four times. The Remains of the Day, his novel, was awarded a prize in 1989. The Times also included him in their list of “The 50 Greatest British Writers Since 1945,” where he came in at number 32. Lorna MacDougal was Ishiguro’s bride in 1986. Currently, they and their daughter Naomi call London home.

Baby Ishiguro is pictured in front of the family samurai swords, banners, and other treasures, sitting as professionally as he could manage. His paternal grandfather was the patriarch of a three-generation household. His grandpa was tasked with establishing Toyota, then a textile machinery company, in China and spent a significant amount of time away from Japan, in Shanghai. Shizuo Ishiguro, Ishiguro’s father, was born in Shanghai. His mother, Shizuko, and the rest of her family were in Nagasaki when it was bombed in August 1945, along with the rest of the city. Ishiguro studied the simplest of the three Japanese alphabets, hiragana, at a kindergarten in Nagasaki.

In April of 1960, Ishiguro moved to Britain with his parents and older sister after his father, a research oceanographer, accepted a position with the British government at the National Institute of Oceanography. Since they only planned to be in England for a couple of years, the family decided to make their home in Guildford, Surrey. Ishiguro went to public school and afterward joined the church choir as a young lad. He began his formal education at Woking County Grammar School when he was 11 years old and stayed there until he was ready for college.

Even though Shizuo Ishiguro’s study was still funded by the British government, the Ishiguro family never went back to Japan.  Ishiguro took off for three months through the United States and Canada in April 1974, with the money he had saved working in a warehouse packing baby food items. He mostly hitchhiked, but at one point took a freight train from Washington state, over Idaho, and into Montana. After returning to England from his travels in North America, he attempted fiction writing for the first time by penning two short pieces.

Ishiguro began his BA studies in English Literature and Philosophy at the University of Kent in Canterbury (UKC) in the fall of 1974. The writings of Proust and Kafka, two authors who would have a lasting impact on him, were exposed to him almost immediately after his arrival. Ishiguro took a year off after his first year of college to serve as a community volunteer in a “multiple-deprived” region in Renfrew, Scotland. This lasted from April 1976 to February 1977.

Here, through friendships with local union officials and low-income families, he developed an interest in politics. In 1976 he also started writing his first novel, which was never published. He started back at school in the fall of 1976 and finished up in 1978. By the time he graduated, Charlotte Bront, Jane Austen, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Plato’s Socratic dialogues had all caught his attention. In 1977, he began work on a second novel that was never finished, and he also continued to sing original songs at area folk clubs.
