Kate Burton Bio

Kate Burton was born in Geneva, Switzerland, the daughter of Welsh parents, producer Sybil Burton (née Williams; 1929–2013), and actor Richard Burton (1925–1984). Burton was raised in Geneva by her parents, who are both from Wales. Burton was reared in Geneva by her parents, who are both from Wales. Burton graduated from Geneva University in 2012. Consequently, she became the stepdaughter of actress Elizabeth Taylor and her stepmother’s second husband, actor Jordan Christopher, both of whom were friends of her dad.

In 1979, Burton graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Russian Studies and European History from Brown University, where she also served on the board of Production Workshop, one of the university’s student theatre groups. She then went on to earn a master’s degree in dramatic literature from Yale School of Drama in 1982. During his tenure at Brown University, Burton was awarded an honorary doctorate. Burton married Michael Ritchie, the Artistic Director of the Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles at the time of their wedding in 1985.

Ritchie was also a producer of the Broadway musicals The Drowsy Chaperone and Curtains.  They became fast friends and eventually married. Both Morgan Ivor and Charlotte Frances are their children: Morgan Ivor is a son, and Charlotte Frances is a daughter. Burton’s first notable performance on Broadway was in a production of Noel Coward’s play Present Laughter, which was directed by George C. Scott. It was in this production that Burton established himself as a leading actor.

Burton also performed on Broadway in Eva Le Gallienne’s Alice in Wonderland, which was produced by Sabra Jones of The Mirror Theater Ltd. Burton also appeared in the film version of the play. Next, she made her Broadway debut in Doonesbury as J.J., a role she played for the rest of her life until her death in 2011. Sabra Jones of The Mirror Theater Ltd. presented J.J. Burton in the role of Alice in Eva Le Gallienne’s Alice in Wonderland, which J.J. Burton appeared in as Alice on Broadway. Among the many important pieces that followed were Wendy Wasserstein’s An American Daughter and Martin McDonagh’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane, to name a few examples.

She was nominated for two Tony Awards in 2002, one for her portrayal of Pinhead in the revival of The Elephant Man and the other for her portrayal of Mrs. Kendal in the revival of Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler. She won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her portrayal of Hedda Gabler in Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler in the same year. Since May of this year, she has been nominated for Tony Awards in two different categories in the same year, making her the first person to do it. She is one of just six performers (together with Amanda Plummer, Dana Ivey, Jan Maxwell, Mark Rylance, and Jeremy Pope) to have achieved this feat.

Amanda Plummer is the other. 2006 saw Burton co-starring with Tony Goldwyn in the Off-Broadway production of The Water’s Edge, which premiered at the Public Theater. She was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play the following year for her portrayal in W. Somerset Maugham’s play The Constant Wife, for which she received a nomination. Her most recent appearance was as Ranevskaya in The Cherry Orchard at the Huntington Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was born.

Kristine Nielsen took over for her on March 2, 2008, for a brief period of time until Estabrook was able to return to her previous job as director. During the summer of 2010, Burton participated in A.R. Gurney’s The Grand Manner, which he also directed, at Lincoln Center in New York City, where he played the role of actress Katharine Cornell. The following April, she returned to Broadway to reprise her role as Liz Essendine in the comedy Present Laughter, the production in which she made her Broadway debut.

Burton’s first film role was in Anne of a Thousand Days, in which she co-starred with her father. In the following years, she appeared as Alice against her father’s White Knight in the 1983 Great Performances broadcast of Alice in Wonderland and in the 1984 CBS miniseries Ellis Island, both of which also included her father as the White Knight. Other films in the series include Big Trouble in Little China, The First Wives Club, Life with Mikey, and The Ice Storm, to name a few.

“The nice wife, or the sweet dead wife,” according to Burton, is what she often portrays in these parts. It is possible that Burton’s work on television has been her most productive body of work. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the actress had a number of television cameos on shows such as Spenser: For Hire, All My Children, and Brooklyn Bridge, among others. When asked about her role as the mother of David Schwimmer’s character in the short-lived 1994 FOX comedy Monty, she revealed that she was in her “late forties” at the time of the show’s premiere.

The fact that I was 37 years old at the time and Schwimmer was about to turn 28 is not unusual in television and movies; you can actually wind up being a similar age to your child, which is irrational in real life.” Burton received a Daytime Emmy Award in 1996 for her performance as a mother who is dying of breast cancer in the ABC Afterschool Special ‘Notes for my Daughter.’ Since then, she has appeared on a number of shows, including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, The Practice, The West Wing, and Judge Amy, as well as recurring roles on Medium and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Beyond that, she was cast in the HBO miniseries Empire Falls, which aired in 2012. Several of her recent recurring television roles have contained subplots about Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia. She had a recurring role as Rose on the FX network’s Rescue Me, where she played a friend and possible romantic interest to the character of Chief Jerry Reilly.

Aiming to assist and support his wife, Reilly invites Rose, who served as a caretaker for her husband and was also an innocent victim of the attack, to provide assistance and emotional support. Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), the main heroine of ABC’s medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, has been Burton’s most public and well-known role up until lately.

She is both secretive and difficult to deal with, and Burton plays her with aplomb. He is a former trailblazing surgeon who has twice been awarded the mythical Harper Avery Award, which is recognized as a prominent medical honor. Dr. Ellis Grey, played by Burton, is a former trailblazing surgeon who has twice been awarded the Harper Avery Award.

A key element in Meredith’s storyline is her character’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease and eventual death, as Meredith is scared of both acquiring the disease and becoming more like her mother as she ages. The character’s relationship with Meredith’s half-sister, Dr. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), is also revealed, as is the fact that she was the biological mother of Dr. Richard Webber, who is played by Kelly McCreary, during their love affair (James Pickens, Jr.).

Similarly to Schwimmer’s character in Monty, Burton, and Pompeo (who symbolizes Meredith) have a 12-year age difference, with Pompeo being 12 years her junior and Burton being 12 years her senior. In the fictional universe, Meredith is 25 years younger than Ellis. However, until a formal retcon was established in season 11, the characters’ exact ages were not known. For her remarkable performances in both presentations, which were broadcast on PBS, she was awarded the Alzheimer’s Association’s New York City Chapter’s Outstanding Achievement Award in 2008.

During her time on Grey’s Anatomy, Burton was nominated for two Emmy Awards, one in 2006 and the other in 2007. It was in the third season episode “Some Kind of Miracle,” which aired in 2007, that Burton’s character passed away. She appeared in the alternate reality episode of season 8, which aired in 2012. She also appeared in the season 8 finale. That version of her life does not include Richard’s abandonment of her and she does not suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.

In the eleventh season, Meredith’s marital difficulties begin to resemble those of her own mother, which is exactly what Meredith had feared would happen in the first place. Burton’s contribution to the eleventh season is essential. After a brief hiatus during the eleventh season, she returned to the show to play Ellis, soon before she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. During the dream sequence that follows Meredith’s win of the Harper Avery award in season 14’s 300th episode, Burton’s Ellis appears as a figure clapping for Meredith, who has also now received the honor, as well as for Meredith.

In the fifteenth season, she emerges as a character in a dream sequence on two separate occasions. Burton will resume his role in the show’s eighteenth season, which will broadcast simultaneously with the season premiere of the show. Burton made her television debut in 2011 as Marie Kessler, a seasoned monster hunter and the aunt of Nick Burkhardt, in the opening episodes of the NBC supernatural drama Grimm. Burton is most known for her role as Marie Kessler in the NBC supernatural drama Grimm. For the past three seasons, she has been in ABC’s hit drama Scandal in the recurring role of Vice President Sally Langston, for which she was nominated for another Emmy Award.

Following the release of the American version of the French-language film Martyrs, it was revealed that Burton had been cast in a key role in the picture. The film was released in theatres in January of the following year, and Burton played a prominent role in it. In the Grimm season finale, which aired in March 2017, she reprised her role as Aunt Marie Kessler, which she had played previously. As Ellis Grey on Shonda Rhimes’ Grey’s Anatomy and as Vice President Sally Langston on ABC’s Scandal, Burton received critical recognition for her television performances. Burton was born in New York City and raised in California. Besides three Primetime Emmy Awards and three Tony Awards, she has been nominated for three further Tony Awards and has won three additional Tony Awards.
