Kate Atkinson Bio

Kate Atkinson was born on 20 December 1951. While most known for her work on Australian television, Kate Atkinson has also appeared in numerous film and television productions, including Japanese Tale and The Hard Word. Kate Atkinson is an Australian actress best known for her roles in the drama/comedy SeaChange, the crime drama Jack Irish, and the long-running series Wentworth, in which she has played the role of Vera Bennett from its inception in 2013 through the series’s eighth and final season.

Kate, like many Australian actors and actresses, has had a long and successful career in theater. She has appeared in numerous shows with the Melbourne Theatre Company, attended many MTC opening nights, and helped the MTC and the Victorian Arts and Business Trust raise funds. Atkinson also has a deep love for animals and is the proud owner of a rescued dog.

Atkinson went on to work on a number of different projects after Wentworth concluded, including a return to the stage, an appearance in the last season of Jack Irish, and the part of Melissa Caddick in the Netflix original series Underbelly: Vanishing Act. Not the End of the World is a collection of short stories, and her books Human Croquet, Emotionally Weird, Case Histories, and One Good Turn have all received high praise from readers and critics alike.

Jackson Brodie, a former police inspector turned private investigator, was introduced to readers in her book Case Histories, which went on to win the Saltire Novel of the Year Award and the Prix Westminster.

The book When Will There Be Good News? was chosen as the best read of the year by Richard and Judy. Began Early, Took My Dog is her third novel featuring ex-private investigator Jackson Brodie, following Case Histories and One Good Turn. Behind the Scenes at the Museum, Kate Atkinson’s debut novel was awarded the Whitbread Book of the Year Prize.

Her novel Life After Life was published in 2013 and has since won the South Bank Sky Arts Literature Prize, the Costa Novel of the Year Award, a spot on the shortlist for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, and the title of “Book of the Year” from the independent bookseller’s associations on both sides of the Atlantic. Both Life After Life and its companion novel, A God in Ruins, which won the Costa Novel of the Year Award, can be enjoyed alone. Kate Atkinson is a member of the Royal Society of Literature and received an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2011.

Before attending York’s Queen Anne Grammar School for Girls, Atkinson attended a private preparatory school. She had always loved reading and decided to pursue a career in academia by earning a master’s degree in English literature from the University of Dundee. She stayed on at Dundee to pursue a Ph.D. in postmodern American fiction. The postmodern style aspects of American writers like Kurt Vonnegut, which she studied while being refused the degree, informed her later work.

Throughout the late 1970s and most of the 1980s, Atkinson worked in a variety of occupations that did not allow her to utilize her literary talents. However, in 1981–1982, she began writing short stories, and she found that this format allowed her to effectively channel her creative energy. In the latter part of the decade, her short tale “In China” triumphed in a Woman’s Own magazine contest.

Behind the Scenes at the Museum, a tragicomedy based on a collection of short stories was Atkinson’s first novel. The novel focuses on Ruby Lennox, whose coming-of-age story doubles as an account of her family’s struggle to survive the Great Depression and World War II. “Footnotes,” which are chapters-long asides from family members whose memories reveal dark secrets underneath the family’s surface, are strategically placed throughout the text by Atkinson. In her subsequent work, Emotionally Weird, Atkinson displayed her propensity to experiment with literary devices by giving different fonts to various characters and locations.

Abandonment, Atkinson’s first full-length play, had its world premiere at Edinburgh, Scotland’s Traverse Theatre the same year that the novel came out. After that, she started penning mysteries starring private eye Jackson Brodie. British actor Jason Isaacs played Brodie in the television adaptation of the first book in the series, Case Histories, which was nominated for a Whitbread Book Prize and eventually became the name of a series. Every time Ursula reincarnates, she faces new opportunities to make a difference in the world. The work was praised for its profound representation of human nature and its unique blend of science fiction and drama.

It won the 2013 Costa Book Award for Fiction and was a finalist for the 2013 Women’s Prize for Fiction. Ursula’s brother Teddy Todd is the subject of A God in Ruins, which follows his life as an RAF fighter but does away with rebirths in favor of a more realistic approach. A lady who worked for MI5 during World War Two is forced to face her demons in the 2018 film Transcription. Shrines of Gaiety, Atkinson’s next novel, is a sweeping tale about a nightclub mogul whose empire is threatened in post-war London.
