Karl Anthony Malone (born July 24, 1963) is a retired professional basketball player from the United States of America. He was known as “the Mailman” because of his ability to play the Power Forward position. Malone was the youngest of nine children, and he spent his boyhood on a farm with his single mother Shirley, who raised him as a boy. Karl Malone’s father, Shedrick Hay, was raising a family with another lady he had married when he committed suicide when Karl Malone was 14 years old; Karl Malone first revealed his father’s suicide in 1994, when he was 14.


Malone spent many hours as a boy helping his father on the farm, chopping wood, hunting, and fishing. He attended Summerfield High School in the area, where he was a member of the basketball team that won three straight Louisiana Class C championships from 1979 to his senior year in 1981.

Despite being courted by University of Arkansas basketball coach Eddie Sutton, Malone chose to attend Louisiana Tech University, which was closer to his family in Little Rock. He joined the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs basketball team in his second year because his grades were too low to be eligible as a freshman. Malone played for coach Andy Russo during his time at Louisiana Tech. During his second season with Louisiana Tech (1983-1984).

Malone averaged 18.7 points and 9.3 rebounds per game while playing in the ACC. Louisiana Tech ended the 1984-1985 season with a 29-3 record, placing them atop the Southland Conference and advancing to the NCAA tournament for the first time in the school’s history; the team was eliminated in the first round of the tournament. Malone was named to the All-Southern Conference first team in each of his three seasons with the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs

 

The professional basketball career The initial years (1985–1987 During the 1985 NBA Draft, the Utah Jazz selected Karl Malone with the 13th overall choice, giving him his current position as the NBA’s best player. It is stated in the official NBA biography of Malone that “If professional scouting professionals had correctly forecast the impact Karl Malone would have on the NBA, Malone would have been selected considerably higher than the 13th pick in the 1985 NBA Draft.”

As a matter of fact, Malone was so confident that the Dallas Mavericks were going to select him with the eighth overall pick that he had even secured a rental property in the city. Detlef Schrempf was selected by the Mavericks in his place.

This included four free throws followed by a three-pointer by Pace Mannion, which helped Malone rally from a 96-89 hole with 5 minutes and 36 seconds left to level the game at 96-96.

Malone finished with 29 points in that game.  The Utah Jazz qualified for the postseason for the third straight season but was eliminated in the first round of the 1986 playoffs by the Dallas Mavericks. Malone increased his scoring average to 20 points per game in the four postseason games, but he continued to struggle with his shooting (49.6 percent field goals) and rebounding (7.3 rebounds per game) (8.9). After his second season, Malone established himself as the Jazz’s best scorer (21.7 points per game) and rebounder (10.4 rebounds per game); between February 1 and April 3, 1987, he was the team’s leading scorer in 24 of 29 games. Malone was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in 1988

From 1987 until 1996, he was an All-Star, a new coach, and the team’s offensive leader. Malone in the late 1980s. By the 1987–88 season, Malone had established himself as the offensive foundation, with John Stockton serving as the floor general. After averaging 27.1 points per game in 1988.


Malone was named to his first All-Star Game, and he was also named to his first All-NBA squad at the conclusion of the season. Malone’s maiden All-Star appearance was the beginning of a string of 14 consecutive appearances. The Western Conference All-Star team was headed by Malone, who scored a total of 22 points during the 1988 NBA All-Star Game.

The Jazz ended with a record of 47–35, good for third place in the Midwest Division, and they advanced to the NBA Playoffs by defeating the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round. The defending champion Los Angeles Lakers, led by perennial All-Stars Magic Johnson, James Worthy, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, defeated the Utah Jazz in the next round, winning in seven games.

But even though Malone scored 31 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in Game 7 of the series, it wasn’t enough for the Lakers, who won 109-98 to advance to the NBA Finals and capture their first championship since 1967.

Malone had an average of 29.7 points and 11.8 rebounds in 11 postseason games during the 1988 season. During the 1988 offseason, Malone agreed to a 10-year deal for $18 million with the Los Angeles Lakers.  In December 1988, Jerry Sloan took over as head coach from Layden, who had been promoted.
