The Kansas City Chiefs are an American professional gridiron football club that competes in the American Football Conference (AFC) of the National Football League. The Chiefs’ home stadium is Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri (NFL). The team was a member of the American Football League (AFL), which is no longer in existence. During their time in the AFL, they won three league titles (1962, 1966, and 1969) as well as Super Bowls IV (1970) and LIV (1974).
When the American Football League was first established in 1960, this club, which had its beginnings in Dallas and was once known as the Texans, was one of the eight founding teams. Lamar Hunt, who had previously been unsuccessful in his attempt to buy the Chicago Cardinals of the National Football League (NFL), was the American Football League (AFL) founder. Hunt organized other prospective NFL owners rejected by the established league to start the AFL. Hunt was the owner of the Texans.
Hank Stram was the first head coach that Hunt employed for the Texans, and he guided the club to two finishes in the center of the pack in each of its first two seasons. Before the 1962 season, the Dallas Texans hired quarterback Len Dawson, who would also be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. That year, Dallas finished the season with an 11–3 record, winning the American Football League championship game against the Houston Oilers.
Because the Dallas market was incapable of supporting two football clubs (the other being the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys), Texans owner Lamar Hunt decided to move the team to Kansas City in 1963. This was even though the team was very successful. After their name change, the Chiefs finished in the middle of the pack in the AFL West standings until 1966. They repeated their previous year’s feat of winning 11 games and the AFL championship.
After that, the Chiefs were a part of one of the most critical events in the history of gridiron football when they competed against the Green Bay Packers in the inaugural annual AFL-NFL World Championship Game (which was subsequently nicknamed the “Super Bowl” by Hunt), but they ended up losing 35–10. Willie Lanier, Bobby Bell, and Buck Buchanan were all future inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 1969, the Kansas City Chiefs had the best defense in the league, and as a result, they were able to win the American Football League title and earn a spot in the Super Bowl.
It was the last game ever played by an AFL club when the Chiefs beat the Minnesota Vikings in the Super Bowl. The two leagues merged in 1970, making this game the last ever played by an AFL team. In 1971, Kansas City once again qualified for the playoffs. Still, after that, the franchise started a phase in which it finished with a losing record in nine of the fourteen seasons between 1972 and 1985, and it did not qualify for the postseason in any of those years.
In 1989, the Chiefs selected linebacker Derrick Thomas in the draught and hired Marty Schottenheimer as their head coach. Schottenheimer led Kansas City to a playoff spot in his second season with the organization. In 1993, the Chiefs moved to the AFC championship game, where the Buffalo Bills defeated them. Joe Montana was the driving force behind Kansas City’s success under Schottenheimer.
In 1995, the Chiefs won a league-best 13 games, led by Thomas and defensive end Neil Smith, who helped lead a strong defense. Despite their success, however, the Chiefs were defeated by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the playoffs. The Kansas City Chiefs finished tied for top place in the league in 1997 but were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, this time at the hands of their rivals in the division, the Denver Broncos.
With a high-scoring offense led by running back Priest Holmes and tight end Tony Gonzalez, Kansas City won 13 games and the division title in 2003, ending a five-year playoff drought and returning to the playoffs for the first time since 1998. A fantastic regular season was followed by postseason heartbreak for the Kansas City Chiefs, who were again eliminated in their stadium by the Indianapolis Colts.
The franchise then experienced a series of moderately successful years, including another postseason berth (and a first-round loss) in 2006. However, the team experienced a sudden decline that resulted in a franchise-worst 2–14 record in 2008, which led to the hiring of a new front office and coaching staff, which assisted in guiding Kansas City back to the playoffs after the 2010 season.
However, that improvement only lasted for a short period, as the club went through yet another coaching change during the end of Kansas City’s poor 2011 season, followed by another change following the 2012 campaign. The already talented Chiefs made huge strides forward in 2013, when new head coach Andy Reid took over, winning 11 games and qualifying for the playoffs. After that, the club was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, bringing the franchise’s winless streak in the postseason up to 20 years.
Next, in the 2015 season, Kansas City finally broke its losing run when the Chiefs defeated the Houston Texans by 30–0. However, the reigning champion New England Patriots knocked the Chiefs out of the playoffs in the following round. The Chiefs had their greatest season in more than a decade in 2016, winning 12 games and taking first place in their division, but they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs once again.
