Julian Fellowes was born on 17 August 1949. Julian Fellowes is a multi-talented British artist who has worked in film, television, and theater. His most notable accomplishment is creating Downton Abbey for the small screen. Julian Alexander Kitchener-Fellowes, Baron Fellowes of West Stafford, is his full title. On August 17, 1949, Julian Fellowes entered the world in Cairo, Egypt.
Although his father was a British ambassador at the time, Fellowes spent his early years in Egypt. While he was a student at Cambridge’s Magdalene College, he joined the comic group Footlights. After that, he continued his schooling in London at the Webber Douglas Academy of Theatre Arts. Starting in the middle of the ’70s, he had guest appearances on a wide variety of shows and films, and he eventually became a regular on the British series Monarch of the Glen.
The 1990s saw him start adapting stories like Little Sir Nicholas, Little Lord Fauntleroy, and The Prince and the Pauper for television as he strove to avoid being typecast. Fellowes’ first season of Downton Abbey premiered in 2010, and it began following the lives of more than a dozen prominent people in the years leading up to World War I. Every member of the Grantham household was represented, from the earl and countess to the scullery maid.
Despite criticism that the British ITV historical piece that premiered there was little more than a soap opera in period garb, the show’s strong script and stellar performances won over audiences and several awards. In 2011, the program and Fellowes were recognized as the best drama series of the year at the Emmy Awards. Even though he wrote the scripts for two feature films that won’t be published until 2019 and 2022, he’s still continuing the story of the characters from Downton Abbey, which ended with its final episode in 2015.
Fellowes continued to juggle multiple tasks at once. The HBO miniseries Titanic, for which he authored the script in 2012, debuted that year. On top of that, he turned Richard Linklater’s film School of Rock into a stage musical, for which he wrote the book. A television adaptation of Anthony Trollope’s Doctor Thorne was written and produced by him in 2016. In the 2020 limited series Belgravia, based on his serialized novel of the same name, Fellowes returned to television. After then, in 2008, the premiere season of The Gilded Age debuted on HBO.
The television drama, set in the high society of New York City in the late 19th century, had Fellowes as a co-creator and co-writer. English actor with decades of experience who won an Oscar for Best Writing in 2002 for his script for the film Gosford Park. After graduating from Cambridge’s Magdalene College, he attended London’s Webber Douglas Academy of Theatre Arts.
They had a son named Peregrine after the bird, and he married Emma Kitchener in 1990. The acting school paid off, as he went on to star in 40 movies and TV episodes afterward. As Julian recognized he needed a fallback, he turned to write. He worked for BBC Television for a while, adopting such classics as “Little Lord Fauntleroy” and “The Prince and the Pauper” for the small screen. Afterward, he wrote a screenplay based on Anthony Trollope’s The Eustace Diamonds, which director Bob Balaban liked. Balaban needed a screenwriter for a murder mystery at the time, so he went looking for someone with connections in British high society. Balaban’s focus shifted to the screenplay he’d written. Because of this, Gosford Park was created.
Both the London and New York productions of Mary Poppins were based on books written by Julian, and he also wrote the script for Vanity Fair, which Mira Nairs directed. His debut novel was Gosford Park. He also wrote and directed the 2005 film “Separate Lies,” which he called a “French picture in English” about married middle-class people experiencing marital dissatisfaction. He predicted the film’s failure, saying, “will likely be steamrolled in the Big, Bad World,” but he added, “I love it and I loved making it, so I have no sad tales to tell.”
In 2006 and 2007, Julian hosted a panel game program on BBC Television called Never Mind the Full Stops. The Young Victoria, which premiered in the United States in December 2009, was based on a script he wrote. His previous claim to fame was writing the script for the Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp picture The Tourist. On the British network ITV1 in 2010, he also developed the smash hit and critically acclaimed period drama Downton Abbey.
The show premiered on the BBC and subsequently made its way across the Atlantic to PBS’s “Masterpiece Theater,” where it was met with critical acclaim and a large audience. The 2012 season of “Downton Abbey” saw it nominated for a record-breaking 16 Emmys, making it the non-American program with the most nominations in Emmy history.
