Julia Ormond was born on January 4, 1965. Julia Ormond, a British actress, co-starred in the expensive HBO drama Stalin when she was only 27 years old, despite already having several years of experience in the theater under her belt and a notable role in the made-for-cable adaptation of the Catherine the Great biography Young Catherine. Julia Ormond’s performance as the long-suffering Mrs. Stalin was hailed as a standout by one critic, despite all the attention paid to Robert Duvall’s heavily accented act as the Soviet dictator.
This was in spite of all the excitement surrounding Duvall’s performance. A film director by the name of Edward Zwick was observing as he prepared to film his own lavish theatrical movie, which was going to be titled Legends of the Fall. After giving a noteworthy performance in the film Fall, which also starred the likes of Anthony Hopkins, Brad Pitt, Aidan Quinn, and Henry Thomas, Ormond, who was on the verge of turning 30 at the time, became Hollywood’s ingénue du jour.
Her parents, a laboratory technician, and a businessman, later divorced when she was a young child. She was a self-proclaimed tomboy who thrived on the field hockey field but discovered her vocation in the theater through participation in school shows. Although she excelled on the field hockey field, she found her calling in the theater. After some dabbling in the creative arts during her time at art school, she decided to enroll in the acting program at London’s Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. She started her career in advertisements for television after she graduated from college, and then she went on to perform in a number of plays before getting her big break in Catherine the Great.
Ormond responded to a question from Premiere magazine about what was next for her by saying, “I’d like to direct, just like Godzilla and the rest of the performing fraternity.” However, after launching her own production company, the actress ultimately made the decision to concentrate on acting. Her most notable performance came in Bille August’s eagerly awaited translation of Peter Hoeg’s best-selling novel Smilla’s Sense of Snow. The film was a commercial and critical failure, and nobody heard from Ormond again until he starred in Nikita Mikhalkov’s Sibirsky Tsiryulnik. During those two years, nobody saw the actor in any other films.
She made her comeback to the Hollywood spotlight in the year 2000, playing alongside Vince Vaughn in the drama Prime Gig, which was about the highs and lows in love and life experienced by telemarketing in California. In the years that followed her participation in the interview for the documentary Searching for Debra Winger, she made an appearance in a wide range of films, ranging from David Lynch’s critically acclaimed drama Inland Empire to the critically panned thriller I Know Who Killed Me. She had a role in the film adaptation of the epic biography Che and played Kit Kittredge’s mother in the film Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, which was released in 2008. She portrayed Vivien Leigh in the film My Week With Marilyn and then went on to star in the TV movie Temple Grandin, which went on to win multiple awards.
This actress won the Emmy in 2010 for Best Supporting Actress in a TV Miniseries or Movie for her performance in the HBO film Temple Grandin. The award was given in honor of her role in the film.
Ormond played the role of a character in the British television serial Traffic, which aired in 1989. In the show, the character was involved in the illegal trafficking of heroin from the Far East to the streets of Europe. Home Office Minister Jack Lithgow, whose portrayal is provided by Bill Paterson, is at the core of the drama as he directs the efforts of the British government to reduce the amount of heroin that is imported.
The casting of his daughter Caroline in the role of a heroin addict propelled Julia Ormond to early prominence in her career. Later on in her career, Ormond had roles in a number of television movies, including Young Catherine and Stalin, among others. In the worldwide film The Baby of Macon, which was released in 1993, Ormond made her debut as an actress in the role of the film’s eponymous character. In the latter part of the same year, she made an appearance in the movie Legends of the Fall starring Brad Pitt.
In 1995, Ormond had starring roles in two critically acclaimed movies: Sabrina, directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Harrison Ford, and First Knight, directed by Jerry Zucker and starring Richard Gere, Sean Connery, and others. In 1997, she had a starring role in the suspense movie Smilla’s Sense of Snow, which was a box office bomb. She appeared alongside Oleg Menshikov in the Russian film The Barber of Siberia, which was released in 1998.
Ormond had a guest appearance on the episode of CSI: New York that aired on CBS during the 2008-2009 television season. She was nominated for an Emmy for the supporting part she had in the film Temple Grandin, which aired on HBO in 2010. In addition, she played the role of Marie Calvet, Megan Draper’s mother, on the American television series Mad Men, which was broadcast on AMC. She was nominated for a Primetime Emmy in the category of Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series in the same year because of her work on the show Mad Men, which earned her the nomination.
