Donaldson, along with her younger sister Mary, was born and raised in Hampstead, London. The family lived in a three-story Victorian mansion near Hampstead Heath and her grandmother lived on the second. Donaldson’s parents, James (affectionately known as Jerry) and Elizabeth, met shortly before WWII, but were separated for six years. Elizabeth worked as a part-time secretary for her boss, Leslie Minchin, and assisted her in translating German lieder into English. Both parents were avid members of the Hampstead Music Club, and Elizabeth sung with the Hampstead Choral Society.Summer vacations were spent at Grittleton House in Wiltshire, where Jerry enrolled in a chamber music summer school, while Julia and Mary ran around and put on musical shows with the other kids. His attempts to sleep on their youth hostel floor resulted in eviction, and the three of them walked out, sleeping on a camp site and even a field by the time they forged a deep friendship. A French entrepreneur noticed them while they were in Paris and invited them to audition. While nothing came of it, Donaldson and Purkis wrote a song for the audition based on the traditional French poem “Metamorphosis,” the first time Donaldson had written a song for a specific occasion (apart from the childhood shows). Julia and Malcolm had gotten together by December 1969. They started providing cabaret for university social events, and in 1970 they travelled to America, busking in Seattle and San Francisco and taking the Greyhound bus from the East to the West coast.
When they returned, the couple began performing in restaurants and began to take part in events such as the Crystal Palace Children’s Day, a London Easter Parade, and a dental congress supper, with Julia Donaldson writing songs specifically for these events. 1970s Julia Donaldson wrote “The French Busking Song” in French and “The Spaghetti Song” in Italian when the pair continued to busk across Europe during their vacations, notably in France and Italy. Donaldson was working as a secretary to Anthea Joseph at Michael Joseph Publishers in London by 1971, although he was also given a lot of freedom as a junior editor
The company created basic, unscripted plays that could be played on the playgrounds of low-income council estates, with audience members filling in for some of the roles. Donaldson’s interactions with children in her own presentations as a well-known children’s author would be forever changed as a result of this. Donaldson composed an operetta for the couple’s wedding reception in Burgh House, Hampstead, which she and Malcolm, together with their best man Colin Sell, bridesmaids, and ushers, performed. Today, the house has a photograph of the wedding on display.Donaldson had been hired as an editor at Robert Tyndall, a small book publisher, and the couple moved to Brighton in August 1974.
