Judy Parfitt Bio

Judy Parfitt is a well-known English actress on stage, cinema, and television. She was born on November 7, 1935. In the 1950s, she made her debut in the film industry, and in 1966, she appeared in a supporting part in the television series David Copperfield, which the BBC produced. In the film version of Hamlet, directed by Tony Richardson in 1969, she also played the role of Queen Gertrude.

Later roles include Vera Donovan in the film version of Stephen King’s Dolores Claiborne (1995) and Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003), the latter of which garnered her a nomination for the Best Supporting Actress award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).  Since the beginning of the program in 2012, she has been a part of the ensemble of the drama series Call the Midwife, where she plays the role of Sister Monica Joan. The year 1954 marked the beginning of Parfitt’s career in the theater when she debuted at the Amersham Repertory Company in a performance of Fools Rush In.

She had a role in the 1968 Hammer television picture Journey to the Unknown, which starred Joseph Cotten and was hosted by Joan Crawford. Hammer produced the film. In the episode of Laurence Olivier Presents titled “Saturday, Sunday, Monday” that aired in 1978, Parfitt played the role of an antagonist alongside Laurence Olivier, Joan Plowright, and Frank Finlay.

In 1981, she originated the part of Eleanor in the production of Peter Nichols’ Passion Play that the Royal Shakespeare Company staged. In the 1984 production of Jack Rosenthal’s The Chain, she portrayed the role of Deidre. In 1987, she had an appearance in the film Maurice. Mildred Layton in The Jewel in the Crown (1984, for which she won her first BAFTA nomination) and Lady Catherine de Bourgh in the 1980 TV serial adaptation of Pride and Prejudice are two of her most prominent parts from the past. Both of these performances earned her a BAFTA nomination.

In the 1995 film Dolores Claiborne, she played the role of Kathy Bates’ old boss, a demanding lady named Dolores Claiborne, who is shown as dying in the present time but as a healthy, luminous woman in flashback flashbacks. She has made cameos in a few American television episodes, the most notable being her recurring part as the Evil Queen Lillian “Lily” White in The Charmings, in which she played Snow White’s Stepmother.

In the Christmas episode of the second season of The Charmings, Parfitt’s real-life husband, Tony Steedman, appeared as a special guest star in the role of Santa Claus. She had a guest appearance on an episode of Murder, She Wrote in 1989, and she played the role of Dr. Elizabeth Corday’s mother in many episodes of ER in 2002. She was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 2003 for her performance as Maria Thins in Girl with a Pearl Earring.
