Joy Harjo, the current Poet Laureate of the United States, is the 23rd individual to assume this role. She proudly identifies as a member of the Mvskoke Nation and is affiliated with the Oce Vpofv community, also known as Hickory Ground. n 2019, Joy Harjo made history by being the first Native American to hold the United States Poet Laureate position.
She is the second poet in history to be selected for three separate terms. In addition to the various collections of poetry that she has published, she has also authored several novels geared toward younger readers. She has put out seven music recordings that have won awards.
Joy Harjo was born on May 9, 1951, in the city of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the United States. Her given name was Joy Foster, but she subsequently changed it to “Harjo,” which was the family name of her Mvskoke grandmother. Harjo is the oldest of four children, and she was the first. Her mother hailed from a long line of revered warriors and speakers who had served the Muscogee Nation in the House of Warriors. Her father was a resident of Muscogee Creek.
Monahwee, Joy’s great-great grandpa, was a well-known commander during the Red Stick War, which took place in the 1800s and was directed against President Andrew Jackson. Harjo’s mother was a waitress with ancestry that included Cherokee, Irish, and French. While Harjo was growing up, she was often exposed to visual artists and musicians, but she did not have any acquaintances who were poets.
Her mother was a songwriter, and her grandmother and aunt were artists in their own right. Harjo was encouraged to pursue her artistic side by these powerful women she looked up to. When Harjo was in the seventh grade, she penned the very first poem that she ever wrote. Harjo was exposed to various obstacles as a kid in addition to his artistic and creative pursuits. Harjo opens out in her memoirs about her father’s struggles with alcoholism and aggressive conduct, which ultimately led to her parent’s marriage breakup.
After this event, Harjo’s mother wed another guy who also harmed the family. Harjo was born after this marriage. As a direct result of these events, Harjo had difficulty expressing himself verbally. She said, “I remember the teachers at school threatening to write my parents because I was not speaking in class, but I was terrified.” She was referring to the fact that she was not speaking in class. Instead of doing that, Harjo turned to painting as a means of self-expression.
She moved away from her family when she was sixteen to enroll at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. While Harjo was a student at this institution, she was actively involved in what she refers to as the “renaissance of contemporary native art.” Around this time, Harjo and her students made significant changes to how Native American art was shown in the United States. She became a member of one of the first all-native theatre and dance ensembles during this period. In addition to that, she was a songwriter for an all-native rock band.
After completing his high school studies, Harjo continued his education in the Pre-Medical program at the University of New Mexico. On the other hand, she was moved by the works of art and creative expression surrounding her. After she met and collaborated with other Native American poets, such as Simon J. Ortiz and Leslie Marmon Silko, she changed her major from English to art and then back to creative writing. Both of these changes occurred during her undergraduate studies.
Harjo didn’t start composing poems until he was twenty-two years old. In 1975, she released her first collection of poetry, titled The Last Song. It had nine poems. After finishing his undergraduate degree a year later, Harjo enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program at the University of Iowa (also known as the Iowa Writers’ Workshop).
She enrolled in film classes after receiving her diploma from this program in 1978. She began teaching at several universities, including the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, Arizona State University in Tempe, the University of Colorado in Boulder, the University of Arizona in Tucson, and the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. All of these institutions are located in the state of New Mexico.
What Moon Drove Me to This? It was Harjo’s first collection of poems to be released as a full-length book, and it was published in the year 1980. This collection of poems she penned in 1975 is presented in its entirety for the first time in book form. She Had Some Horses, one of her most well-known poetry collections, was first released in 1982.
She was named the Best Female Artist of the Year at the Native American Music Awards in 2009, which she went on to win. Harjo was chosen as Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets in 2019, in addition to serving as a founding board member and Chair of the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation.
