Joy Behar is an American comedian, actress, talk show presenter, and writer who is well-known across the world. She has hosted various chat programs on television, including ‘The View,’ ‘The Joy Behar Show,’ ‘Joy Behar: Say Anything!,’ and ‘Late Night Joy.’ She has also been on a variety of podcasts. Before entering the entertainment industry, she worked as a high school English teacher. Behar attended Washington Irving High School for her secondary education (later renamed, Washington Irving Campus). Following that, she went on to study Sociology at Queens College, part of the City University of New York.
She graduated from Queens College in 1964 and went on to get a master’s degree in English from Stony Brook University the following year. She married Joe Behar in 1965 when she was still pursuing her master’s degree at Columbia University. In 1966, after receiving her M.A. from Stony Brook University, Josephine Behar settled down to domestic life in Centereach, Long Island, while her husband continued to study on his Ph.D. at Stony Brook. However, having been reared as a ‘city girl,’ she found it difficult to acclimate to life in Centereach and felt like a fish out of water. The year 1968 marked the beginning of Behar’s career as an English teacher at Lindenhurst Senior High School. Even though she did not love teaching, she continued to occupy some academic positions until 1979. Towards the conclusion of this time, she began teaching college students who had been enlisted during the Vietnam War (see below).
Joy Behar resigned from her teaching position when she came close to death from an ectopic pregnancy in 1979. She decided to try her luck in the television business and establish herself as a stand-up comic. But she was well aware that it would be difficult since she did not have a mentor. When she needed assistance, she turned to her husband’s cousin, who happened to be working as the lighting director for ABC’s “Good Morning America” at the time. When she first started working on the program, she was hired as a receptionist, and after two years, she was elevated to the position of assistant producer. In addition to her job for GMA, Behar started doing stand-up comedy performances at different nightclubs across New York City. She filed for divorce from her husband in 1981 and was awarded custody of their little daughter. She started to support herself and her daughter by doing stand-up comedy performances to supplement their income.
She was fired from her position at GMA in 1983, which had a devastating impact on her life. When she went to see a therapist, she was advised that “without a straight job, all hurdles vanish.” Following the instruction, she immediately entered the entertainment industry, beginning her career by playing in modest venues in Greenwich Village.
