Ligairi was born on the island of Oahu in Hawaii on October 9, 1980, to a Fijian immigrant father and an American mother who were both attending BYU-Hawaii and working at the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie, Hawaii at the time of his birth. American filmmaker and podcast host Joshua Aukai Ligairi. He and colleague filmmaker Andrew James are most well-known for their work on the documentary Cleanflix, which they co-wrote, directed, produced, and edited. New York, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Nashville, Orlando, Boston, and Charlotte were just some of the film festivals where the film was shown, followed by Q&A sessions with Ligairi and James. Michael Moore and Ligairi spoke on a panel regarding the future of documentary film distribution at Moore’s State Theater at the 2010 Traverse City Film Festival. The panel included Ligairi as a participant. A distribution deal was negotiated between Ligairi and James and United Films in April 2011 after they won “Best Documentary” at the New York United Film Festival in late 2010.
In 2012, the film was released to theaters everywhere. Knights of Mayhem, a documentary reality program that Ligairi helped produce and which aired on the National Geographic Channel in 2011, was a joint effort. The show followed Charlie Andrews as he became the recognized leader of the Heavy-Armored Jousting community as Captain of the Knights of Mayhem and World Champion. The Knights of Mayhem was also a part of the show.
Ligairi entered a contest to find “the next great documentary filmmaker” on the reality show Pursuit of the Truth in 2012. Vince Vaughn and Glenn Beck are responsible for creating the show. In order to create a feature film that would be judged by a panel of industry professionals, the series includes well-known filmmakers Ligairi and Chris Bell, as well as four filmmakers making their directorial debuts. Peter Billingsley and Daniel Chalfen served as two of the panel’s three judges. In addition to Budrus, the panel included Tribeca Film Festival co-founder Craig Hatkof.
Glenn Beck’s TV network, The Blaze, will fund and air the winning episode of “Pursuit of the Truth.” After Plan 241’s eventual third-place finish, he was offered finance and distribution by TheBlaze, but he turned down both offers. Since then, Ligairi has been funding the production of Plan 241 with his own resources. Kairi’s friend Charlotte Cook joined her in starting a podcast. The podcast covered documentaries by reviewing them and interviewing those who made them.
Whitney Matheson of USA Today named it one of the top 10 film podcasts despite the fact that it was only accessible for a total of 12 episodes. Ligairi began working with film critic turned podcast presenter Jason Pyles on their show Movie Podcast Weekly in 2012. Ligairi made a guest appearance on Episode 3 of the podcast and took over hosting duties in Episode 14. Throughout the show, co-hosts Karl Huddleston and Andy Howell were there to help out. In 2014, the group was nominated for two Podbody Awards: “Best Podcast” and “Best Podcast Hosts.” The hosts of Ligairi and Pyles’s other podcast, Movie Podcast Weekly, ultimately revoked these honors from them. Ligairi replaced Jason Pyles, his co-host on Movie Podcast Weekly, as producer and anchor of Movie Stream Cast in November 2013.
