Joseph S. (Sepp) Blatter was born on March 10, 1936 in the town of Visp, which is located in Switzerland and is close to the Matterhorn. After receiving his high school diploma from Sion and St. Maurice colleges in Switzerland, he continued his education at the University of Lausanne’s Faculty of Law, HEC, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration and Economics degree. There is one daughter in Joseph Blatter’s family.
Joseph Blatter started his professional career in Switzerland as the Head of Public Relations for the Valaisan Tourist Board. He later became the General Secretary of the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation (1964). After that, he worked as a journalist and in public relations in the fields of sport and private industry. He was involved in the organisation of the Olympic Games in both 1972 and 1976 while serving as the Director of Sports Timing and Public Relations for Longines S.A..
Blatter started working for FIFA in 1975, first in the role of Technical Director, which he held until 1981, and then in the role of General Secretary, which he held until 1998, when he was elected to the position of FIFA President. He was re-elected as the head of FIFA in 2002, and on May 31, 2007, he was re-elected unopposed for another four years as head of FIFA, despite the fact that only 66 of FIFA’s 207 members nominated him for the position.
Blatter, who is fluent in a number of languages, was selected by the Executive Committee of the global governing body to serve as the new General Secretary in 1981. In 1990, he was elevated to the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Under his stewardship, a total of five World Cup competitions were played out (Spain in 1982, Mexico in 1986, Italy in 1990, USA in 1994 and France in 1998).
During this time, he also assisted his predecessor, Joao Havelange, in leading the negotiations for the television and marketing contracts as well as the modern commercialization of the FIFA World Cup up until the year 2006. This was done up until the year 2006. At the end of March 1998, he was persuaded to run for president of FIFA as their candidate by the fact that he received direct support from a large number of national associations across all of the confederations, as well as the interest expressed by those national associations.
On May 29, 2002, in Seoul, Joseph S. Blatter was given a second term as president of FIFA after being re-elected. On Thursday, May 31st, Joseph S. Blatter was confirmed in the position for a third term of office by acclamation, and on Friday, June 1st, 2011, he was elected to a fourth term in the position. Joseph S. Blatter is one of the most versatile and experienced exponents of international sports diplomacy.
He is also completely dedicated to serving the interests of football, FIFA, and the youth of the world. The many years of service that the President of FIFA has provided in a variety of areas of world football have provided him with the know-how and the vision that are the prerequisites for guiding football into the new millennium and for mastering the array of challenges that are present in modern-day football.
Blatter intends to integrate not only the primary male protagonists into the decision-making process of world football by establishing a permanent communications network that is based on state-of-the-art technology. Rather, he wants to integrate increasingly more of their female counterparts, including female players, coaches, and referees. In addition to this, he desires a more open and transparent dialogue with FIFA’s economic, political, social, and cultural partners, as well as a closer working relationship with the confederations, national associations, leagues, and clubs.
Joseph S. Blatter plans to ensure that football makes a valuable contribution towards improving public health standards by means of relevant technical and scientific research. This will demonstrate that football plays an extremely important role in society in a variety of ways, which Joseph S. Blatter believes will convince more people that football is a sport that should be taken seriously.
Because Joseph S. Blatter is of the opinion that football has a duty towards society, he has devoted a significant portion of his time and energy over the course of many years to participating in a wide variety of charitable endeavours. Joseph S. Blatter was the impetus behind a partnership that was established with SOS Children’s Villages in the year 1994. This nonprofit organisation keeps more than 130 villages for children in different parts of the world, and FIFA provides both financial and material support for its operations.
Joseph S. Blatter has been the President of FIFA since June 1998, when he was first elected to that position. Since then, he has collaborated with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to form a partnership, and he is also a co-founder of the campaign “Pure Hope, Pure Football.” Blatter also helps out by donating football equipment to refugee camps, and both he and FIFA are extremely dedicated to the fight against child labour.
As a result of this, FIFA, which he chairs, has recently signed a code of conduct with the International Labour Organization (ILO), which is part of the United Nations. Joseph S. Blatter serves as the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) representative on the Foundation Board of the World Anti-Doping Agency. This is a very important organisation. According to legend, his personal motto is “football for all, all for football.”
As the Director of Sports Timing and Public Relations for Longines S.A., he had the opportunity to participate in the organisation of the Olympic Games in 1972 and 1976, giving him his first taste of the action on the international sports scene. Mr. Blatter, in his capacity as Director of Technical Development Programmes at FIFA, started putting President Joao Havelange’s projects into motion during the summer of 1975.
