Bio

American actor and musician John Richard Schneider was born on April 8, 1960. He is most remembered for his roles as James “Jim” Cryer on Tyler Perry’s television series The Haves and the Have Nots and Beauregard “Bo” Duke in the American television action/comedy series The Dukes of Hazzard. The youngest of Shirley Conklin  and John “Jack” Schneider III’s three sons, Schneider was born on April 8, 1960, in Mount Kisco, New York. His parents were Shirley and the late pilot John “Jack” Schneider III, who died in 2013.  His mother is a native of Sanford, Florida . Robert, an elder brother who lives in southern New York, was an artist.

Three years prior to the birth of John, his other brother, also named John, passed away at age 3 from lung failure. John started performing as a performer when he was eight years old, performing magic performances for his friends and their families. This once led him into trouble when he attempted to recreate Harry Houdini’s famous escape act by chaining himself up and throwing himself into a swimming pool. He and his mother moved to Atlanta, Georgia, when he was 14, where he continued to enjoy performing. He attended Sandy Springs, Georgia’s North Springs High School. He co-starred with James Best, a seasoned actor, and fellow newbie Tom Wopat in the part of Bo Duke at the age of 18. For his interview, he “I borrowed a beat-up pickup truck, put on a thick country accent, and donned a wild hat.

I went in without shaving and with a beer. They seemed to like it, whether they actually believed it or not.”  To the dismay of many fans, Schneider said he never jumped the car because of the risk involved in the action. Nevertheless, he did learn to drive the famous Dodge Charger on the show. In 100 episodes of Smallville in 2001, he played Jonathan Kent, Clark Kent’s adoptive father. One of the Smallville episodes, “Talisman,” was directed by Schneider. Schneider’s involvement on The Dukes of Hazzard is mentioned in a few episodes. For instance, the season five episode “Exposed” is notable for reuniting Schneider with Tom Wopat, another cast member from The Dukes of Hazzard.

In the second half of season five, Schneider made two guest appearances in the episodes “Void” and “Oracle.” For the opening of Smallville’s tenth season, Schneider made a comeback and reprised his recurring role as Jonathan Kent. In 2010, Schneider made appearances in several episodes of Desperate Housewives as a retired military man and the father of Keith Watson, Bree Van de Kamp’s love interest, and in the television series Leverage as a dishonest music executive in the third season episode “The Studio Job.” Schneider started playing music while he was on Dukes of Hazzard. Early in the 1980s, Schneider signed with Scotti Brothers Label and issued Now or Never, his debut studio album, which reached its highest point at No. 8 on the US Country Billboard charts.

One of the highest charting Elvis covers ever is the track “It’s Now or Never,” a remake of the Elvis Presley smash that peaked at number four on the US Country Billboard charts and number fourteen on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1981. In 1984, Schneider joined with MCA Nashville and continued to put out albums like Quiet Man and If You Believe. Schneider’s debut No. 1 singles, “I’ve Been Around Enough to Know” and “Country Girls,” were included in the MCA Nashville album Too Good to Stop Now, which also peaked at No. 1 on the CAN Country music charts.

The next year, Schneider released Tryin’ To Outrun the Wind and A Memory Like You, the latter of which marked a first for Schneider by debuting at No. 1 on the US Country Billboard charts. The singles “What’s a Memory Like You” and “You’re The Last Thing I Needed Tonight” from the album A Memory Like You both reached the top of the US Country Billboard charts and the CAN Country charts. Schneider continued to put out albums in the late 1980s, including his Greatest Hits collection. After taking a break to pursue acting chances, Schneider made a comeback in 2014 with the films Worth The Wait, John’s Acoustic Christmas, The Promise, and Home For Christmas, co-starring Tom Wopat from The Dukes of Hazzard.

He played a drifter who moves into a tiny village and improves it in the 2011 movie Doonby. But a threatening entity pursues him. Schneider explains, “It’s a Lovely Life without the wonderful part. Make a movie out of It’s a Wonderful Life by reaching down and pulling it apart from the inside. In an advertisement for Autotrader.com from 2014, he reprised his role as Bo Duke alongside Tom Wopat in his role as Luke Duke. Schneider made five cameo appearances on Hee Haw and the miniseries 10.5, among many other movies and TV shows. He made guest appearances on episodes like Diagnosis: Murder, Touched by an Angel, JAG, and Walker, Texas Ranger, in addition to his regular part on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.

Schneider appeared on the television show CSI in the 2009 episode “Kill Me If You Can.” His real-life son Chasen Schneider played a recurring part in the first season of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, in which he made an appearance. John played “Marshall Bowman” between the summer of 2008 and the beginning of 2009. His character was written off since he declined to stay for the remainder of the second season.

He also rose to fame as a recording artist and a brand ambassador for items at the height of the series’ popularity. Schneider and co-star Tom Wopat were forced to abandon the programme for the most of a season in 1982 due to a tangle of legal disputes with the producers over the division of merchandising earnings. Only when their claims were granted did they return to their positions in February 1983. In 1985, the programme was ended after seven seasons. Opening Night at the Boar’s Nest, the series finale that Schneider directed, debuted on CBS on February 8, 1985.

Since the early 1980s, Schneider has also maintained a singing career in addition to his acting profession. He has produced nine studio albums, a best hits collection, and 18 singles. This number includes the top-charting country songs “I’ve Been Around Enough to Know,” “Country Girls,” “What’s a Memory Like You,” and “You’re the Last Thing I Needed Tonight.”
