On August 30, 1942, in New Brighton, Eastern Cape, South Africa, John Kani entered the world. After returning to South Africa from a performance of the anti-apartheid play “Sizwe Banzi Is Dead,” police officials attacked him, causing him to lose his left eye. Despite being severely battered, Kani managed to survive. Subsequently, in 1975, he took home a Tony Award for his work on the play. In his current life, the actor/playwright lives with his wife Mandi, and their son Atandwa.
South African actor, voice actor, writer, and director John Kani. He became a household name after portraying King T’Chaka in both “Captain America: Civil War” and “Black Panther,” two films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In 1965, he joined the theater troupe Serpent Players, where he made his professional acting debut. After he graduated from college in the 1970s, Kani started penning stage works.
His two Tony Award-winning plays, “The Island” and “Sizwe Banzi Is Dead,” are his most well-known works as a dramatist. His fame stems from his many appearances on both televisions and in the theater. A live-action adaptation of Disney’s The Lion King, featuring his voice as Rafiki, is scheduled for release in 2019. It is good knowledge that Kani, one of the most talented playwrights/screenwriters of the present day, is also a gentleman. People are consistently taken aback by his genuine nature and easygoing approach.
John Kani moved to Port Elizabeth in 1965, where he immediately became involved with a theater troupe known as the Serpent Players. He went on to write other plays with the company, all of which were well received at their staged readings but were never published. Together with Winston Ntshona and Athol Fugard, he wrote the play “Sizwe Banzi is Dead” in 1972. The team penned the play The Island the next year. These two plays were both huge hits, earning their authors Tony Awards for their efforts.
It was the 1978 British action flick The Wild Geese in which Kani first appeared on the screen. In the drama picture Marigolds in August, released two years later, he made an appearance. The actor starred in the film Killing Heat back in 1981. He then went on to star in “Saturday Night at the Palace” and “Master Harold… and the Boys.” In 1989’s American drama/historical film “A Dry White Season,” he played Julius. Starring in films including “Sarafina,” “The Ghost and the Darkness,” and “Kini and Adams” throughout the years 1992–1998.
He appeared in the 2001 movie “Final Solution,” which was inspired by the life of Gerrit Wolfaardt. His first play, “Nothing but the Truth,” was written the next year, marking his official debut as a playwright. The Fleur du Cap Award for best new South African drama was given to the play in 2003. The actor starred in the TV series “Hillside” from 2005 to 2008. 2009’s “Endgame,” a drama, featured him prominently. His next film role was in 2011’s “Coriolanus,” an adaptation of Shakespeare’s play.
Kani was chosen to play T’Chaka in the 2016 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Captain America: Civil War. In the sequel, “Black Panther,” released two years later, he once again played the same character. His role as Rafiki in Disney’s The Lion King was announced in August 2017, and he was cast in that capacity.
On August 30, 1943, Bonisile John Kani entered this world in the South African township of New Brighton, not far from the city of Port Elizabeth. While working in a car factory in 1965, he decided to use his dramatic skills as a form of protest against apartheid. He enrolled in the Serpent Players Drama Workshop.
When Kani went to see Fugard at the Serpent Players, he ran into Fugard. And in the early 1970s, the three men joined together to write two plays, Sizwe Banzi Is Dead and The Island, with the help of Ntshona. The protagonist of Sizwe Banzi, a black guy, assumes a new identity to avoid discrimination and gain employment. Filmmaker Peter Foyo tells the story of political prisoners held on Robben Island in Island.
Kani shot to international prominence with his performances in those two plays, first in his native South Africa and then beyond. Kani and Ntshona performed in two separate Broadway productions in 1975, and they were both nominated for and awarded Tony for outstanding actor. Each piece was also nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play, Broadway’s highest prize. However, shortly after returning to South Africa in 1976, Kani and Ntshona were detained and kept by police for several weeks.
For the rest of the 1980s and ’90s, Kani was a regular on the South African stage. The Market Theatre Laboratory was founded and is being led by him. Young students who might not otherwise have access to theatrical training can benefit from the lab’s theater instruction. Kani has also made appearances in a number of international films, such as A Dry White Season and The Ghost and the Darkness.
Kani, working alone, explored the disparities between South Africans who left the nation to fight apartheid and those who stayed to fight in a play that premiered in 2002. Nothing but the Truth was awarded the highest honor in Cape Town theater, the Fleur du Cap. In 2008, it was adapted into a feature film. As well as playing the major role and directing the film, Kani also wrote the script.
