John Grisham Bio

John Grisham was born on February 8, 1955, in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He initially planned to get into the pros, but after realizing he lacked the necessary skills, he changed his major to accounting at Mississippi State. He attended law school at Ole Miss and graduated in 1981. He then spent nearly a decade practicing law in Southaven, Mississippi. He was first elected to the state legislature in 1983 and remained there until 1990.

Grisham got the idea for his first novel while waiting in line at the Desoto County courthouse. Grisham finished A Time to Kill in 1987, after working on it for three years. After being passed over by several publishing houses, Wynwood Press agreed to publish it in June 1988.

That could have been the end of Grisham’s pastime. But he was already working on his next novel, which would turn his pastime into a new job and launch one of publishing’s greatest success stories. Grisham started writing another novel the day after he finished A Time to Kill, this one about a rising star lawyer who is enticed to join a seemingly ideal law firm but turns out to be less than it seems. The book rights to Grisham’s works were purchased by Doubleday after he sold the film rights to The Firm to Paramount Pictures for $600,000. The Firm was 1991’s best-selling novel, staying on The New York Times list for 47 weeks.

Grisham’s position as the maestro of the legal thriller was solidified by the success of The Pelican Brief, which debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list, and the subsequent publication of The Client. Due to Grisham’s popularity, A Time to Kill was reissued by Doubleday in hardcover and subsequently by Dell in paperback.

Grisham’s family consists of his wife and two kids. The family travels back and forth between their Victorian farmhouse in Mississippi and their plantation in the Charlottesville, Virginia area.

After a gap of five years, Grisham returned to the courtroom in 1996, taking several months away from his writing. He was fulfilling a promise he’d made to the family of a train brakeman who was killed when he was caught between two cars before he gave up practicing law to focus on writing full-time. Grisham presented the case effectively in court, and the jury awarded his clients $683,500, the largest verdict of his career.

In 2005, John Grisham was honored with the Tulsa Library Trust’s Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award. The Manuscript Division of the Mississippi State University Libraries is home to a John Grisham Room containing the author’s legislative papers. Grisham is a staunch advocate for the next generation of writers, having endowed scholarships and writers’ residencies in the English Department and Graduate Creative Writing Program at the University of Mississippi. The literary magazine Oxford American was founded by him as well.

According to John Grisham himself, it wasn’t until he started his work that he even considered becoming a writer. He didn’t put much effort into his first two years of university. He went to three schools before finally graduating. He had to give up his childhood dream of becoming a professional baseball player in order to devote himself to studying accounting and becoming a tax attorney.

His focus moved from tax law to criminal litigation while he was in law school. He attended law school at the University of Mississippi and later returned to Southaven to start a solo practice. He won a seat in the Mississippi State Legislature that year. During his second term, he served in numerous capacities, including as vice chairman of the Apportionment and Elections Committee and as a member of the Insurance, Judiciary “A,” and Military Affairs Committees.

In Mississippi, professional attorneys are sometimes asked to represent indigent clients in court as public defenders. Through his involvement in the system, Grisham gained first-hand knowledge of the criminal justice system. Grisham’s decision to create a novel was prompted by his attendance at a court case in a Mississippi courthouse. He spent several years getting up at five in the morning, six days a week, to work on his debut novel, A Time To Kill. He submitted his book to 28 different publishing houses before finally finding an obscure one that was willing to produce a limited edition. The first-time author approached bookstores personally, bypassing the traditional publishing industry’s distribution channels.

Grisham had already started working on his second novel, The Firm, despite the lackluster sales of A Time to Kill. At the same time, he chose not to run for reelection to the state legislature because he was tired of the monotony of life in the state capital and wanted to spend more time with his family. In an effort to devote more time to writing, he shut down his Southaven office and uprooted his family to Oxford, Mississippi.

At the age of 36, his career as a novelist took off when the movie rights to his novel The Firm were sold for a significant sum. Over seven million copies of The Firm were sold, and it was on The New York Times bestseller list for 47 weeks. After the popularity of The Firm, John Grisham decided to devote himself full-time to writing.

Since then, he has only gone back to practicing law once, in 1996, when he successfully represented the family of a railroad worker who was killed on the job. Meanwhile, he’s kept up his pace of nearly releasing a new legal thriller once a year, and each one has been a smashing success. The Chamber, The Rainmaker, The Street Lawyer, The Testament, The Brethren, The Summons, and The Broker are the seven books by him that have been bestsellers in their respective years as of this writing.
