Bio

The son of John Osteen and Dolores, Joel Scott Osteen was born in Houston. His father was a pastor at a Southern Baptist church and the creator of the Lakewood Church when he was born. He attended Oral Roberts University for a while but dropped out in 1981 to help launch his dad’s TV production company and serve as publishing supervisor for their Houston-based ministry program.

His charismatic delivery and infectious grin have captivated the hearts of nearly seven million people around the world. Joel Osteen is the Pastor of Lakewood Church and a well-known televangelist in the United States. His sermons are frequently held in arenas and stadiums where every seat is taken. Osteen is not your typical preacher, what with his dashing good looks and sermons about “living life to full potential,” “living in victory,” and “seizing destiny moments.” He has amassed such a large following that he might be considered a religious seminary in his own right and a spiritual leader.

After his father passed away, he worked in the television ministry after briefly attending Oral Roberts University. His books have reportedly sold 3 million hardback copies worldwide and have appeared on the New York Times best-sellers list. His critics range from hard-core fundamentalists to mainstream evangelicals who see no harmony between his “prosperity preaching” and the teachings of Jesus. This unwaveringly upbeat pastor oversees the largest congregation in the United States at Houston’s Lakewood Church.

At a private ceremony in 1992, Lakewood’s six-person board ordained him as a pastor. He took over as pastor of Lakewood Church after his father’s untimely death in 1999. The first sermon he ever preached was just a week before his father passed away. One of his most well-known books, “Your Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Living at Your Maximum Potential,” was published by him in 2004.

He and a sizable contingent from his Lakewood Church trouped all across the country to perform for packed houses. The Houston Rockets’ first venue, the Compaq Center, became the new home of Lakewood Church in 2005. England, Northern Ireland, Israel, and Canada were among the many countries visited on the 2007 leg of the tour. His second book, “Become a Better You: 7 Secrets to Transforming Your Life Every Day,” was out that same year.

In 2007, ’60 Minutes’ devoted 12 minutes to a segment titled “Joel Osteen Addresses his Critics.” At this point, it became clear that his approach to instruction was unconventional. Daily Readings from Become a Better You: Ninety Devotions for Enhancing Your Life Every Day was published in 2008 under his name. Following the success of his first book, the following year he released It’s Your Time: Ignite Your Faith, Realize Your Goals, and Grow in God’s Favor.

In 2011, he admitted for the first time on Piers Morgan’s show, “Piers Morgan Tonight,” that he had never gone to seminary or earned a divinity degree. New York Times best-seller “Your Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Live Your Life at Its Full Potential” was published in October 2004. This was his first book, and it remains one of his most important works today. Once this came out, he was designated one of Time magazine’s “10 Most Interesting People” and was declared “inspirational” by failed presidential contender John McCain. Not only did the book become a bestseller, it also broke the record for the fastest-selling nonfiction book in publishing history.

His book “Become a Better You: 7 Secrets to Enhancing Your Life Every Day” was a best-seller in 2007 and had an initial print run of more than 4 million copies. This is another one of the seminal works that brought him to prominence. This was his first book, and it remains one of his most important works today. When Osteen’s father passed away in 1999, Joel became the senior pastor. Lakewood grew rapidly under his direction and eventually surpassed all other American churches in size. He quickly increased the church’s visibility in the media by increasing its spending on billboards and other forms of outdoor advertising, increasing its allotment for television airtime by a factor of two, negotiating with various networks for primetime slots, and focusing on the largest media markets. In just a few short years, his weekly television broadcast had become the most-watched inspirational show in the world. In 2004, he published the best-selling book Your Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Realizing Your Whole Potential.

Osteen, who looks young and approachable and has been dubbed “the smiling preacher,” often avoids using heavy or conventional theology in his sermons. Instead, his sermons were short and optimistic, always ending with the refrain, “God wants us to have a better life.” The public responded well to this approach, but Osteen was harshly criticized by many who saw him as nothing more than a motivational speaker presenting a diluted version of Christianity.

Some people said he was preaching a “prosperity gospel” that was just an excuse to get rich. He said he didn’t want to lose sight of the “goodness of God” and that he didn’t think prosperity had to be measured in monetary terms. He defended Lakewood’s overtly commercial approach to membership growth, saying that churches that didn’t “change with the times” were doomed to dwindling attendance or even closure.
