Bio

Known professionally as “Broadway Joe” or “Joe Willie, Joseph William “Joe” Namath born May 31, 1943 is a former Amere who grew up in Pittsburgh’s Lower End neighborhood. He was born in Beaver Falls, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, thirty miles from the city, and was nicknamed “Broadway Joe” or “Joe Willie.”

He excelled in football, basketball, and baseball, among other sports. Namath was a frequent dunker in high school basketball at a time when it was still uncommon for players to make a dunk. Namath’s football team, which was coached by Larry Bruno at Beaver Falls, won the WPIAL Class AA championship in 1960 with a perfect 10-0 record. Coach Bruno would later be the one who presented him to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Following graduation, he received offers from a number of Major League Baseball teams, including the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Cleveland Indians, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Philadelphia Phillies, but he chose football over baseball. Namath has stated in interviews that he wanted to sign with the Pittsburgh Pirates and play baseball like his idol, Roberto Clemente, but that he chose to play football instead because his mother wanted him to pursue a college degree. Ironically, Namath would not complete his degree until 2006, when he enrolled in an online program to complete it.

Namath received numerous offers from Division I college football programs, including Penn State, Ohio State, Alabama, and Notre Dame, but he initially chose the University of Maryland after being heavily recruited by Maryland Assistant Roland Arrigoni. Namath played his college football at Penn State, Ohio State, Alabama, and Notre Dame. Maryland rejected him because his college-board scores were just a few points below the minimum required by the school.

Namath accepted a full football scholarship to the University of Alabama after extensive recruiting by the school’s head football coach, Bear Bryant. After Namath was recruited by Bryant, he stated that it was “the best coaching decision” he had ever made. Playing college football during my college years Between 1962 and 1964, Namath was a member of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team, which was coached by Paul “Bear” Bryant. He led the Alabama Crimson Tide to a National Championship in 1964, a year after being suspended for the final two games of the season.

Namath would go on to be referred to as “the greatest athlete I ever coached” by Bryant. While some speculated about what was expected to be a tense relationship between a freedom-loving player and an iron-fisted coach, Namath echoed Bryant’s praise, frequently referring to him as “not only the smartest coach I’ve ever known but the man who taught me what it means to be a person of integrity.” He broke down during his address when he mentioned Bryant, who had died of a heart attack the year before Namath was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Namath had been inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1985. Namath didn’t finish his academic education until 2007, having dropped out to seek a professional career earlier.

Namath will experience a culture shock during his time at Alabama. Namath attended Alabama during the height of the Civil Rights Movement in the Southern United States (particularly in the Deep South), and he frequently got into fights with his white teammates and other white Southerners when defending the African-American quarterback. Beaver Falls’ Lower End neighborhood had been (and continues to be) predominantly African-American as of 2010.

For the University of Alabama, he played college football from 1962 to 1964 under the tutelage of coach Paul “Bear” Bryant and his assistant, Howard Schnellenberger, and professional football in the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League (NFL) during the decade of the 1960s and early 1970s. Namath was a legend in the American Football League, where he spent the majority of his professional career with the New York Jets before finishing his career with the National Football League’s Los Angeles Rams

Namath retired after 140 games in which he recorded 62 victories, 63 defeats, and four ties. The quarterback tossed 173 touchdowns and 220 interceptions in his career while completing 1,886 passes for a total of 27,663 yards.  AFL and NFL veteran who played for three division champions (the 1968 and 1969 AFL East Champion Jets, and the 1977 NFC West Champion Rams), one league championship (the 1968 AFL Championship), and one “world championship” during his thirteen years in the league (Super Bowl III).

On The Sporting News’ list of the 100 greatest football players published in 1999, he was ranked number 96 on the all-time list. As a Jets player, he was the only one on the list who had played for the team for the majority of his career. Most notably, he is credited with confidently guaranteeing a Jets upset victory over Don Shula’s National Football League Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III (1969) and then following through on his promise.
