James F. Hawkins is an American former actor, producer, and writer. He is best known for his TV roles in shows like Annie Oakley, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Leave It to Beaver, Petticoat Junction, and The Donna Reed Show; and as Tommy Bailey, son of George Bailey in the 1946 film It’s a Wonderful Life.
Hawkins is the author of five books about the film It’s A Wonderful Life, served on The Jimmy Stewart Museum Advisory Board, and for 20 years served on the board of directors of the Donna Reed Foundation for the Performing Arts. In celebration of the Frank Capra film, Hawkins and other cast members appear annually at the “It’s A Wonderful Life Festival” in Seneca Falls, New York, the town thought to be the inspiration for the movie’s setting of Bedford Falls.

He also appeared on “Leave It To Beaver”, “Dennis The Menace”, “Gidget”, “My Three Sons”, “Hitchcock Presents”, “Red Skelton”, “Lux Video Theatre” etc. He co-starred as Elvis Presley’s sidekick in two MGM musicals, “Girl Happy” and “Spinout”. He was invited by The USO & Department of Defense to entertain troops in Viet Nam (1968) As a producer, Jimmy’s credits include “Evel Knievel” (Major Motion Picture), ” Don’t Look Back” … The Satchel Paige Story (ABC Theatre) which won him NAACP’s Image Award … “Scouts Honor” (NBC MOW) starring Gary Coleman … which celebrated The 50th Anniversary of The Cub Scouts of America … Disney’s “Love Leads The Way”(The Disney Channel) … “A Time For Miracles”…the Story of Mother Seton (ABC Theatre).
“Smart Cookies” … based on his original story … “Be Prepared” celebrated the 100th Anniversary of The Girl Scouts (The Hallmark Channel). He created the 3-hour NBC Emmy Award-winning television special “The 50th Anniversary Motown Returns to the Apollo”. Mr. Hawkins produced the PBS Television special all-star radio version celebrating It’s A Wonderful Life’s 50th Anniversary.
Over the years he has helped raise millions of dollars for a variety of charities. He is the author of five popular It’s A Wonderful Life books and sits on the Advisory Board of The Jimmy Stewart Museum and for 20 years served on the Board of Directors of the Donna Reed Foundation for the Performing Arts. Hawkins had starring roles in several television series: The Ruggles (1949-1952), Annie Oakley (TV series) (1954-1957, syndicated), The Donna Reed Show (1958-1966, ABC), and Petticoat Junction (CBS, the first four seasons, 1963-1967). He also had recurring roles as (1) a friend of the Nelson brothers on ABC’s The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and (2) Jonathan Baylor on CBS’s Ichabod and Me sitcom with Robert Sterling and George Chandler in the 1961-1962 season. He guest starred in many other programs during his childhood and young adult years.
Hawkins was born in Los Angeles to Thomas J. Hawkins (1913-1993) and Bette C. Hawkins (born ca. 1916). His first roles — as a two-year-old — were uncredited – Spencer Tracy’s The Seventh Cross and Lana Turner’s Marriage Is A Private Affair at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios. His mother was the force behind his early childhood acting. He graduated from the Roman Catholic-affiliated Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles.
