As a result, Carter was the first president of the United States to be born in a medical facility. He was the oldest son of Bessie Lillian Gordy and James Earl Carter Sr., who had him as their firstborn child.: 70 Thomas Carter, an English immigrant who arrived in the Colony of Virginia in 1635, is Carter’s ancestor. Carter is a descendant of Thomas Carter. Many generations of the Carter family in Georgia have made their living as cotton producers.
At the time of Carter’s birth, Plains was a thriving community of six hundred inhabitants. His father was a prosperous local businessman who owned a general store and made investments in agricultural land. He also farmed some of the land he owned. In the years leading up to and during World War I, Carter’s father held the position of reserve second lieutenant in the United States Army Quartermaster Corps. Carter’s family relocated multiple times when he was still a little child, eventually settling on a dirt road in the town of Archery, which at the time was nearly completely comprised of economically disadvantaged African American households.
Eventually, his family welcomed three more children into their home: Gloria, Ruth, and Billy. He had a healthy relationship with both of his parents. Because of her extended work hours, she was missing from his life on a regular basis when he was a child. Jimmy was able to make friends with the children of the black farmhands despite the fact that his father was a fervent supporter of segregation. Carter was an enterprising young man who was granted his own acre of farmland by Earl, where he produced, packed, and sold peanuts. Earl recognized Carter’s potential and gave him the land.
In addition to that, he was involved in the leasing of a portion of the housing complex for tenants that he had purchased. Carter went to Plains High School from 1937 through 1941 and graduated from the eleventh grade due to the fact that the school did not provide a twelfth grade at the time. However, the family was able to benefit from New Deal farming subsidies, and Carter’s father acquired a role as a community leader during this time. At the time, Archery and Plains had been reduced to abject poverty as a result of the Great Depression. Carter was a hardworking student who also had a passion for reading in his spare time.
After he and his pals skipped school to go downtown in a hot rod, the story goes, he was passed over for the position of valedictorian. This is a widely circulated narrative. A local newspaper made note of Carter’s absences from school, despite the fact that it is unclear whether or not he would have otherwise been valedictorian. When Carter was a teenager, he participated in basketball on the Plains High School team and joined a youth organization called the Future Farmers of America. Both of these activities contributed to the development of a lifetime passion for carpentry in Carter.
Plains, Georgia is where Carter was born and raised. In 1946, after graduating from the United States Naval Academy, he entered the submarine service of the United States Navy. After that, he went back to his hometown and started a new chapter in the peanut farming enterprise that had been in his family for generations. After that, he made clear his opposition to racial segregation, provided support for the expanding civil rights movement, and became active in the Democratic Party. Between the years 1963 and 1967, he was a member of the Georgia State Senate, and later, between 1971 and 1975, he was the Governor of Georgia.
Carter secured the Democratic nomination in 1976 and went on to barely defeat the incumbent Republican president, Gerald Ford, in the election for the presidency of the United States. Carter was a dark horse contender who was not well known outside of Georgia. All people who had evaded the draft during the Vietnam War were granted pardons by Carter. He devised a national energy policy that incorporated new technological advancements, controls on energy prices, and conservation efforts. The Camp David Accords, the Panama Canal Treaties, and the second round of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks were all concluded as a result of his efforts, which were fruitful. In addition to this, he had to deal with stagflation.
The United States Department of Energy and the Department of Education were both formed during his presidency of the United States. The Iranian hostage situation that lasted from 1979 to 1981, the energy crisis that began in 1979, the accident at Three Mile Island, the Nicaraguan Revolution, and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan were the events that brought an end to his presidency. In response to the invasion, President Carter escalated the Cold War by abandoning détente, placing a grain embargo against the Soviets, elaborating the Carter Doctrine, and spearheading the international boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics that were held in Moscow. All of these actions were taken in response to the invasion. He was defeated handily by Ronald Reagan, the nominee of the Republican Party, in the 1980 presidential election.
The work that Jimmy Carter did after he left office to establish the Carter Center in order to advance and protect human rights was recognized with the Nobel Peace Prize in the year 2002. He embarked on a substantial amount of travel in order to mediate discussions for peace, observe elections, and advance efforts to eliminate contagious diseases. While continuing to comment on global affairs, he has written numerous books, ranging from political memoirs to poetry, and he is a key figure in the nonprofit housing organization Habitat for Humanity.
He has also written two books on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, in which he criticizes Israel’s treatment of Palestinians as apartheid. Although Carter’s post-administration accomplishments are held in high regard, historians and political scientists tend to place him in the middle of the pack in terms of his performance as president. He is the American president who served the longest post-presidency and also holds the record for longest life expectancy. In addition to this, he is the third-oldest surviving person who has ever held the position of head of state for a country.
During the years 1946 through 1953, when President Carter was serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets, his family made their home in Virginia, Hawaii, Connecticut, New York, and California. 1948 saw the beginning of his officer training for submarine duty, which he completed aboard the USS Pomfret. In 1949, he was given the rank of lieutenant junior grade, and during his duty aboard the Pomfret, he participated in a mock war patrol that traveled to the western Pacific and along the Chinese coast. This voyage lasted from January until March of that year. In 1951, he was given a job aboard the diesel-electric USS K-1 (SSK-1), where he eventually qualified for command and served in a variety of capacities, including that of executive officer.
