Jimmy Carr was born on September 15, 1972. He is well-known for his characteristic chuckle and the deadpan delivery of controversial one-liners for which he has received both praise and criticism. His television appearances as host of Channel 4 panel series such as 8 Out of 10 Cats, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, and The Big Fat Quiz of the Year began in 1997 and have continued to this day.
During the greater part of his childhood, Carr lived in the small town of Farnham Common, Buckinghamshire, where he attended both Burnham Grammar School and Farnham Common School.
Nora Mary Carr passed away at the age of 57 from pancreatitis in 2001. After she passed away, Carr’s connection with his father deteriorated. His father was exonerated of harassing Carr and his brother Colin and received an apology from the Metropolitan Police after being arrested in 2004.
The Carrs visited Limerick and Kilkee frequently to stay in contact with Carr’s Irish ancestors. Carr attended Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge to major in social science and political science. He graduated with first-class honors in 1994. He remained at Shell’s marketing department, but he resigned in January of 2000, citing that he was “miserable” in his position.
He claims that studying NLP taught him to see the mental roadblocks that were keeping him from realizing his dream of being a comedian. In a month, he went from zero to stand-up. He did his first paid stand-up performance later that month, following his first unpaid bar show the month before. Carr hosted two game shows on Channel 4. He hosted a number of Channel 4 specials titled “The 100s,” which ranked anything from the “100 Worst Pop Albums” to “The 100 Best Cartoon Characters” and “The 100 Scariest Moments in TV History.”
From 2004 to 2006, Carr hosted an American version of Distraction on the Comedy Channel. In addition, he was nominated for the Rose d’Or as the best host of a game show in 2006. Carr’s The Big Fat Quiz of the Year airs on Channel 4 every December. His hosting resume also includes Big Fat Quiz of Everything one-offs.
In April of 2010, Carr hosted the first British comedy roast show on Channel 4, titled A Comedy Roast. On May 6, 2010, he appeared alongside David Mitchell, Lauren Laverne, and Charlie Brooker as co-hosts of Channel 4’s Alternative Election Night. In January 2011, he was one of the four hosts on Channel 4’s 10 O’Clock Live, a comedic news program.
Carr hosted two episodes of ITV’s Sunday Night at the Palladium in 2014 and 2015 as a guest host. He presided over the 2018 season of The Fix, a Netflix comedy panel show. From 2018 through 2020, Carr hosted the Roast Battle show on Comedy Central. Carr frequently appears on Loose Ends and The Fred MacAulay Show as a guest and interviewee. Carr hosted the BBC Radio 2 comedy retrospective It’s Been a Horrible Year in January 2005. He co-hosted a Sunday morning Xfm radio show with comedian Iain Morris until July 2006.
Jimmy Carr has been a regular on podcasts since at least 2010 when he and Frankie Boyle hosted an episode titled Jimmy Carr and Frankie Boyle: Meet the Comedians. Carr’s podcast appearances skyrocketed when the COVID-19 outbreak was at its height. Carr doesn’t take more than five weeks off between stand-up tours, which he performs nonstop for most of the year. His most recent podcasts include The Betoota Advocate, You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes, The Comedian’s Comedian, The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast, and Dane Baptiste Questions Everything. Two days of his act, Charm Offensive, during the 2003 Edinburgh Festival were completely sold out.
In 2006, he began his Gag Reflex tour, for which he won the British Comedy Award for “Best Live Stand-Up.” His third DVD, Jimmy Carr: Comedian, was released in November 2007. Carr performed for an audience of 50 in London on February 3, 2007, and the performance was broadcast live on Second Life at the same time. On November 8th, 2010, Jimmy Carr released his sixth Live DVD, titled Jimmy Carr: Making People Laugh. Carr’s Laughing Treatment tour, which took place in 2010 and 2011, kicked off at the Edinburgh Festival.
In 2006, Carr and Lucy Greeves wrote The Naked Jape: Uncovering the Secret World of Jokes, an exploration of the history and theory behind the art of humor. In December 2021, a memoir/self-help book titled Before & Laughter was released.
Several of the longest-running panel shows in the UK have been hosted by him on television, including Channel 4’s Big Fat Quiz of the Year and Big Fat Quiz of Everything, as well as 8 Out of 10 Cats and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. In addition to hosting The Fix on Netflix, Jimmy also hosts Roast Battle on Comedy Central in the UK.
Live, Stand Up, Comedian, In Concert, Telling Jokes, Making People Laugh, Being Funny, Laughing & Joking, and Funny Business is just eight of Jimmy’s live DVD releases. More than 1.2 million copies have been sold of his books. Jimmy was the first British comedian to secure a stand-up special deal with the American streaming giant Netflix in 2015. In March of 2016, Jimmy’s Netflix special, Funny Business, premiered. British Prime Minister David Cameron called his 2012 investment of millions of pounds in the K2 Tax plan “morally reprehensible.” He later apologized, but the technique was deemed legitimate and classified as tax avoidance rather than evasion.
