Jessica Hilda Mauboy was born to parents Ferdy and Therese on August 4, 1989, in Darwin, Northern Territory. Her father, an electrician, is from Indonesia’s West Timor island, and her mother is from Australia’s Far North Queensland’s rainforest. She has one younger sister, Sophia, and three elder sisters named Sandra, Jenny, and Catherine.
She started her education at Wulagi Primary School in Darwin and continued on to Sanderson High School before she left at the age of eleven. Her parents were also musicians, thus she grew up in what was reportedly the “noisiest house on the block” due to their constant singing and guitar playing. Ever since she was a little girl, she and her grandma Harriett have been regulars in the church choir.
She moved to Sydney after winning a single recording contract with Sony Music Australia, where she released a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want Have Fun” with a country twist. After placing second in the fourth season of the Australian music competition ‘Australian Idol,’ which also led to a recording contract with Sony Music Australia, R&B/pop singer/songwriter/actress Jessica Mauboy shot to prominence.
To young girls and Australia’s indigenous communities, she is an inspiration as one of the country’s most prominent female performers. She released a live album of her performances on the show as her musical debut and afterward joined the girl group Young Divas, with whom she contributed to their second studio album, titled New Attitude. A year later, she embarked on a solo career, which has yielded the albums “Been Waiting,” “Get ‘Em Girls,” and “Beautiful.” She has appeared on innumerable shows, starred in the musical comedies Bran Nue Dae and The Sapphires, and was the main character in the TV series The Hidden Daughter. She has also contributed to both “The Sapphires” and “The Hidden Daughter” soundtrack albums. She has been honored for both her acting and singing careers with a slew of accolades.
In 2006, Jessica Mauboy made it to the final twelve on “Australian Idol” after her audition performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing” wowed all three judges. She reached the finals with consistently strong performances despite a sore throat that almost cost her the competition but ultimately came in second place to Damien Leith.
She re-signed with Sony Music Australia two weeks after ‘Australian Idol’ ended in December 2006 and made her professional music debut with the live album ‘The Journey’ on February 24, 2007. One disc featured new renditions of songs she sang during the competition, while the other featured her actual TV appearances.
She began singing with the girl group Young Divas in September of 2007, and on November 24, 2007, their album, New Attitude, was released and was certified gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association. She sang on “Indonesian Idol” the following year after being chosen to participate in the Australian government’s “In2Oz” initiative, which aims to strengthen links between Australia and Indonesia.
After leaving Young Divas in August 2008 to pursue a solo career, she dropped her debut studio album, Been Waiting, on November 22, 2008. The album reached No. 11 on the Billboard 200 and was certified double platinum. She joined the UK record label Ministry of Sound in February 2009 and opened for Beyoncé in Australia on the “I Am… World Tour” that September.
In ‘Bran Nue Dae,’ the cinematic adaptation of the 1990 Aboriginal musical of the same name, Jessica Mauboy made her acting debut in January 2010 as Rosie, a church singer, and the protagonist’s love interest. In the same year, she also appeared in the TV miniseries “Underbelly: Razor,” in which she played a nightclub singer.
She was one of five musicians from around the world chosen in May of 2010 to perform “Everyone,” the official theme song of the Summer Youth Olympics. Her second studio album, titled “Get ‘Em Girls,” was published on November 5 of that year, and it reached the top six on the ARIA album list. She starred in the 2012 film adaptation of the musical The Sapphires and contributed 15 original songs to the film’s soundtrack. Double platinum status was awarded to the album after its run atop the Australian album chart.
Released on October 4, 2013, ‘Beautiful’ is her third studio album and has already been certified platinum. On July 18, 2014, she dropped her first EP, titled “iTunes Session.” Jessica Hilda Mauboy was born in Darwin in 1989. At the age of 14, she won a local talent hunt and signed a recording contract with Sony. However, her attempt at a country cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want Have Fun” was met with indifference, and she remained mostly unknown until she tried out for the 2006 season of Australian Idol on Network Ten’s amateur talent show. Mauboy had a rough route to the finals, with a sore throat performance nearly costing her the competition.
Even though Mauboy was predicted to win the series, she ended up losing to Damien Leith on November 13th. The Journey, her live CD, was released in February 2007; she signed with Sony BMG a month later. Mauboy quickly afterward became a member of the girl group Young Divas, where she helped promote the second album New Attitude. By the middle of 2008, however, she had already departed to pursue her career on her own.
