Jessica Lucas, who was born in Vancouver to a black father and a white mother, has had a rewarding career that has taken her from relatively minor roles in Canadian indies to the spotlight. In 2014, Lucas played alongside Kit Harington and Emily Browning in the expensive costume drama Pompeii, as well as fellow Canadians Kiefer Sutherland and Carrie-Anne Moss. After then, she became a mainstay of the Gracepoint miniseries.
Jessica Lucas, who played Riley Richmond on the 2009–10 season of Melrose Place, had wanted to be an actress ever since she was a little girl. At the age of seven, she had her first stage debut. As early as the age of 12, she entered Toronto’s Children’s Arts Theatre School and soon began landing bit parts in major musicals like Grease, Cinderella, and Mousetrap. When she returned to Vancouver, one of Canada’s largest production centers, she maintained her stage work while also beginning the often soul-destroying but necessary chore of auditioning for work in films and television shows being made in and around Vancouver. In 2000, she made her acting debut in an episode of the science fiction series Seven Days.
Her breakthrough came when she was cast as the lead in the Canadian adolescent drama Edgemont. From 2001 through 2005, she co-starred as Bekka Lawrence with Kristen Kreuk, Grace Park, and Sarah Lind in 47 episodes. After her success with Edgemont, Lucas went on to feature in shows like The Sausage Factory and 2030 CE; however, at the age of 24 in 2004, she secured a more mature part as a guest star on The L Word.
In 2004, he also landed a leading role on the ABC sitcom Life as We Know It, co-starring with Jon Foster and Missy Peregrym. Despite the show’s short run (only 11 episodes) and subsequent cancellation, Jessica Lucas was able to use her exposure to land roles in bigger movies. One thing I’ve noticed about L.A. is that strangers constantly try to hit on you when you’re driving. When the guy sitting next to you in the automobile rolls down his window, it can be really unnerving.
It’s not easy to find interesting people in L.A. due to the city’s tendency toward superficiality. When I can, I avoid the glamorous side of the industry and focus on leading a normal life. Just me, I guess.
Performing in musicals is a dream of mine. As I mentioned before, I got a taste of singing in Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son (2011) and would love to do it again. Yes, but only on the Great White Way or in the movies. I don’t see myself pursuing a singing career.
I’m not looking for a wild party animal; I prefer someone who is interested in the arts. Instead of watching TV, I’d rather visit a museum, go on vacation, or see a play. To me, that is far more intriguing than attending the hottest dance party. At the age of seven, I joined my first community theatre. Performing was a wonderful outlet for me. I didn’t make the connection between what I was performing on stage and what I was seeing in my favorite movies at the time.
I suppose photo shoots qualify as modeling, but the industry has never piqued my attention. Actually, I find it rather dull. It’s not something I would ever do.
J.J. Abrams, a famous film producer, hired Lucas for a secret project in 2007. In fact, the film’s title wasn’t even revealed until after principal photography had concluded. Cloverfield, the finished product released in 2008, became the breakout hit of the young actor’s career.
Soon after her return to television, she appeared in four episodes of the new 90210 starring Shenae Grimes, AnnaLynne McCord, and Jessica Stroup. She played Riley Richmond, a good-natured elementary school teacher, in the reimagined version of the 1990s hit Melrose Place, which she joined the cast of in 2009. She also appeared alongside Laura Breckenridge and Katheryn Winnick in the VHS horror flick Amusement.
Starting the year 2013 on a negative note was Jessica Lucas. It starred in the much-anticipated series Cult, which premiered on February 19, but was canceled a few weeks later on April 10. The CW aired the final two episodes of the 13-episode series later that year, but it’s never fun to be a part of a show that gets canceled before its time. Fortunately, she appeared to be making great strides in her film career. As Michael B. Jordan’s lawyer wife in the 2014 film That Awkward Moment, portrayed by Jessica Lucas, the two were married in real life.
The problem is that she has been cheating on him and is plainly in control of the situation. A buddy movie, yes, but Lucas holds her own in every scene she’s in. She also commanded the screen in the brief moments she was on it in Paul W.S. Anderson’s historical action-adventure film Pompeii, as was already highlighted.
