Her father, Ron Slate, is a businessman and poet who previously worked for EMC Corporation as vice president of international communications before becoming the CEO of a biotech company. Ron Slate was both a poet and a successful businessman. Nancy Gilson, his mother, was a potter as well, but she opted to stay at home with her three sons and two daughters.

Ron Slate and Nancy Gilson, Slate’s parents, welcomed him into the world on March 25, 1982, in Milton, Massachusetts. She is the middle kid of a family of three children, with an older sister named Abigail and a younger sister named Stacey, who in their household are the equal of her older and younger sisters. Her mother is a dedicated follower of the Jewish faith, as is the rest of her family.

An interesting fact about her grandmothers is that one of her grandmothers was born in Cuba to a family that had members of the Swedish and Croatian nationalities, and she was raised in France, which is a rare occurrence in this country. Slate continued her education at Columbia University, where she majored in literature and was a founding member of the improv act Fruit Paunch, which performed on the Varsity Show. Her first encounter with Gabe Liedman, who would go on to become her humorous collaborator in subsequent years, took place there.

Slate earned a bachelor’s degree in 2004 from Columbia University in the field of journalism. After growing up in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, Slate relocated to Los Angeles in the early aughts with filmmaker Dean Fleischer-Camp to pursue a career as a screenwriter, which he began in the early aughts. Because of their hectic schedules, Slate, Liedman, and Silvestri announced in 2015 that the concert would be their last, but they have continued to perform together whenever the opportunity presents itself. Slate met Liedman for the first time in 2000 while both were students at Columbia University, and the two remained friends after that. As described by Slate, their relationship can be described as a “nonsexual romance.”

“I like to think of us as a little like Elaine Benes and George Costanza, but we enjoy one other’s company,” writes Slate.
