Jenny Han Bio

Jenny Han is an American author who writes fiction for young adults as well as fiction for children. The To All the Boys series and The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy, both of which she wrote and which were subsequently made into film series and television series, respectively, brought her the most fame.

Han was reared in Richmond, Virginia, by his Korean-American parents, where he was also born. She received her diploma from the Governor’s School for Government and International Studies in the year 1998  and thereafter enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She attended The New School for Creative Writing and earned her Master of Fine Arts degree there in 2006. Her area of concentration was creative writing.

During her time in college, Han authored the children’s novel Shug, which was her very first published work. Annemarie Wilcox, a young girl of twelve years old who is attempting to manage the challenges of junior high school, is the protagonist of the novel Shug, which was released in 2006. Her next project was a young adult romance trilogy called “A Girl’s Coming of Age During Her Summer Breaks,” and it was about a girl coming of age during her summer holidays.

The three novels, The Summer I Turned Pretty, It’s Not Summer Without You, and We’ll Always Have Summer, were released by Simon & Schuster between the years 2009 and 2011 and soon became best sellers on the New York Times Best Sellers List. The protagonist and narrator of the trilogy is a woman named Belly Conklin, and the novel follows her as she navigates a complicated love triangle after falling in love with two brothers she has known her whole life.

Burn for Burn, the first book of Han and Siobhan Vivian’s second young adult trilogy was published in 2012. The trilogy was written by Han and Siobhan Vivian jointly. There are aspects of the supernatural and romance in this book, which follows three high school girls as they seek vengeance in their hometown on an island. The first book in the trilogy, Fire with Fire, was released in 2013, and the second book, Ashes to Ashes, was released in 2014.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is a young adult romance novel that was published in 2014 by Han. The story is about a high school student named Lara Jean Song Covey, whose life is turned upside down when the letters she wrote to her five former crushes are shipped without her knowledge. The rights to adapt the novel for the big screen were acquired just a few short weeks after the book was published.

The following year saw the publication of the sequel, titled P.S. I Still Love You, which went on to win the Young Adult 2015–2016 Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature. In 2017, a third book titled Always and Forever, Lara Jean was made available to readers. Production on the film version of the first novel began in July 2017, with Lana Condor playing the lead role. The movie was made available on Netflix in August 2018, and it received positive reviews from critics.  In the movie, Han appeared for only a few seconds as a cameo.

To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You and To All the Boys: Always and Forever were both released in the years 2020 and 2021 as sequels to the film To All the Boys. In May of 2023, Han debuted the television series XO, Kitty, which was a spinoff of the To All the Boys film series. Han had conceived the series. In addition to these roles, Han will also be a writer, an executive producer, and a showrunner. Kitty Covey, sister of Lara, will have her own adventure in the series as she searches for the one true love of her life.

The Summer I Turned Pretty was adapted into a television series that debuted on Amazon Prime in June 2022. The series was based on Han’s novel series of the same name. A cameo appearance by Han may be seen in the final episode of the series. The television adaptation was notable in part because it had a number of changes that were made to the narrative in order to make it more varied. For instance, throughout the book, the character Belly seems to be white, and this is supported by the cover of the first edition of the book.

In contrast, Belly is a multiracial character in the television show; her white father and Korean American mother make up her family. In the novel, Belly’s mother is referred to by the name Laurel Dunne; but, in the television series, she goes by the name Laurel Park. In addition to this, the television adaption features a number of individuals who are outwardly gay, and one of the main characters, Jeremiah, is bisexual. The television show was picked up for a second season even before the first season was made available to the public.
