Many martial artists found inspiration in Jean-Claude Van Damme’s films. Van Damme popularised Muay Thai and kickboxing via his films long before either form became widely practised. Films like “Bloodspot” and “Kickboxer” may not have huge budgets, but they nonetheless made millions at the box office throughout the globe and undoubtedly influenced a new generation of martial artists and performers.
His skinny, wimpy childhood belied his ultimate success as a martial arts celebrity in Hollywood and the coining of the moniker “Muscles from Brussels” by his fans. This Belgian celebrity began his career as a bouncer after training in martial arts at a young age. His first break in the industry came from the hitchhiking film “Missing in Action,” which served as his springboard to Hollywood.
Although his fame skyrocketed, he was unable to move as quickly up the Hollywood ladder because of the many low-budget film contracts he had already signed. Many other martial arts performers and fans have tried to replicate his signature karate kick with the 360-degree jump. Claude Jean-Camille Born in the Brussels suburb of Berchem-Sainte-Agathe to parents Eugene and Eliana Van Varenberg, Francois Van Varenberg is considered a member of the Royal House of Orange-Nassau.
When he was just 11 years old, he realised he needed to do something to increase the amount of muscle in his body, so he started training in Shotokan karate. He was mentored by Claude Goetz, a karate expert at the Centre National De Karate. His adolescent years were spent learning ballet and training weights. In 1980, he married Maria Rodriguez, but by 1984, they were already divorced. He married Cynthia Derderian in 1985, but they later divorced.
He married Gladys Portuges in 1987, and they divorced four years later. He was wed to the American actress and model Darcy LaPier from 1994 until 1997. He just divorced LaPier and is now living with his second wife, Portuges. Nicholas Van Varenberg, Bianca Bree Van Varenberg, and Kristopher Van Varenberg are his offspring.
This Hollywood martial arts star and actor struggled with drug addiction and was subsequently hospitalised. He opened a gym and did some modelling in Brussels, but he was really into the concept of acting. He had a short stint working as a bouncer at a bar during this period. He started his professional full-contact karate career in 1977 after competing in a few competitions and semi-contact battles. He was undefeated from 1977 until 1982, winning 18 of his 20 bouts and losing only one against Sherman Bergman.
He travelled to Los Angeles in 1982 to seek a career in Hollywood after failing miserably to break into the thriving martial arts film business in Hong Kong. Along with his longtime buddy and fellow extra Michel Qissi, he was cast in the film Breakin. In the 1986 film “No Retreat, No Surrender,” he played the role of Ivan Krushensky.
The year 1987 would become one of the most fruitful for the actor, leading to his big break in the movie industry. With his role as Frank Dux in Bloodsport, he was able to combine his two passions—martial arts and acting—at long last. In the 1988 TV miniseries “War and Remembrance,” he had a silent cameo as a Secret Service agent. He had a brief appearance in the film Black Eagle that same year.
Around this time, he began signing contracts with low-budget film studios and was featured in 1989’s “Cyborg” and “Kickboxer,” the latter of which was a financial success in the United States. Between 1990 and 1993, he appeared in a wide variety of films, such as Death Warrant, Lionheart, Double Impact, Universal Soldier, Last Action Hero, Nowhere to Run, and Hard Target. In addition to his work on ‘Double Impact,’ he produced ‘Lionheart’ and acted as the film’s combat choreographer.
In 1994, he starred as a time-travelling officer in the financially successful film Timecop. It is expected that this will be the actor’s most successful picture financially. His films often started bombing at the box office after the success of “Timecop.” From 1995 through 1999, he was in a string of commercial flops, including “Sudden Death,” “The Quest,” “Maximum Risk,” “Double Team,” “Knock-Off,” and “Universal Soldier: The Return.”
After a break from movies, he appeared in Bob Sinclair’s “Kiss My Eyes” music video from 2003. A year later, he appeared in an episode of “Las Vegas” as himself. JCVD, his 2008 comeback to wide-release theatres, was a middling success. Critics praised his role in the film, ranking it second only to Heath Ledger’s turn as The Joker in “The Dark Knight.”
In the 2009 film “Universal Soldier: Regeneration,” he returned to the role of Luc Deveraux. He made a guest appearance on the TV show “Robot Chicken” the very same year. As ‘Master Croc,’ he provided his voice for the 2011 hit animated film Kung Fu Panda 2. In addition, he appeared in many advertisements for Coors Light Beer. The comedy film “Welcome to the Jungle” featured him two years later.
