Jason Mantzoukas was born on 18 December 1972. Jason Mantzoukas is a talented writer, comedian, and actor. He also does it all. His fan base is substantial due to the fact that he is famous for his appearances as Sacha Baron Cohen’s co-star in the film The Dictator and as Rafi in the comedy series The League on FX.
Nahant, a town located in the state of Massachusetts, was where Mantzoukas spent his childhood. During his time as a student at Middlebury College in Vermont, he became a member of the improv troupe Otter Nonsense Players and started performing improvised comedic routines. After completing his studies at the undergraduate level, Mantzoukas continued his musical education by traveling for a number of years around Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
After moving to New York in 1998, he immediately became a member of the improv group Mother, which was one of the original house teams of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, and he started making frequent appearances at the theater to do stand-up comedy. After some time, Mantzoukas became a member of the teaching staff at UCB and began guiding students through the complexities of improv. During this time period, Jason established himself as a promising performer in the comedy scene in the Big Apple. In 2006, the comedy trio that he co-founded with his good friend Ed Herbstman, The Mantzoukas Brothers, received a nomination for Best Improv Duo from Time Out New York. As a direct result of his early achievements, he was able to quickly transition from improv comedy to acting on both the big and small screen. Terrorists were his first job in the film industry, and it was a dark comedy.
After Mantzoukas graduated from college in 1995, he applied for and was awarded a Watson Fellowship. This gave him the opportunity to spend nearly two years in North Africa and the Middle East studying the music of religious and transcendental traditions. His defense was that he had a “terrible yet was lovely in the room; therefore [he received the grant].” Even though he had already been through five or six auditions for the Blue Man Group prior to leaving for Morocco on the Watson Fellowship, he ultimately decided to travel before the process was finished. This decision was made despite the fact that he had previously applied for the fellowship.
A total of eight and a half months were spent in Morocco by the man in order to study and record Gnawa music. Other countries that he went to included Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Jordan, and Syria while he was on his tour. Both in Morocco and Turkey, officials prevented him from entering a conflict zone. In Morocco, he was arrested because his tourist visa had expired, and in Turkey, they prevented him from accessing the fighting zone.
In 1998, he made the move to New York City and very immediately established himself as a regular performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, where Amy Poehler was his instructor. He was a member of one of the UCB’s early house teams, which was referred to as “Mother.” While attending UC Berkeley, Mantzoukas was employed by J.P. Morgan in the computer graphics department for a period of time that exceeded three years.
Mantzoukas and fellow comedian Ed Herbstman were known as “The Mantzoukas Brothers” for a number of years, and in 2006, Time Out New York named them the “Best Improv Duo.” Mantzoukas and Jessica St. Clair collaborated on the composition and performance of “We Used to Go Out” and “First Date” as a writing and performing partnership. After making a pitch for a pilot show to HBO, they were successful in landing a deal with Comedy Central. Similar similarities were drawn between Nichols and May, and the two of them continue to collaborate and perform on the Womp It Up! podcast. At some point in the future, Mantzoukas would work at UCB as a professor of improv, a position in which he would train students at the most advanced academic level.
