Jarvis Cocker was born on 19 September 1963. In the 1990s, when his band Pulp was a member of the groundbreaking Britpop scene, he initially gained widespread recognition. Born in Sheffield, Northern England, Jarvis Cocker grew up there. Mac, his father, uprooted the family and took off for Sydney, Australia. Mac was a disc jockey and an actor. The mother of Jarvis and his sister, who is now a Tory councilor, raised the two of them. Cocker and his sister made a long trip to Australia in 1998 to spend time with their dad. As a radio DJ, Mac Cocker had found popularity before retiring to a hippy commune in Darwin.
Jarvis Cocker, at 25 years old, uprooted to London to attend Central St. Martins for a BFA in Fine Art and an MA in Cinema. In 1991, he finished school. Pulp, the band, started out under the name Arabacus Pulp. Cocker had just turned 15 years old. From 1983 to 1992, Pulp released three albums under their new moniker. The band didn’t break through until the 1990s, long after Jarvis Cocker had left to attend university in London.
The band’s biggest hits would come from their album Different Class. Success followed with the 1998 album This Is Hardcore and the 2001 album We Love Life, although neither album was as popular as Different Class. The band is currently on indefinite hiatus after disbanding after the publication of a greatest hits album. Jarvis Cocker, frontman for the band Pulp during the heyday of Britpop, was a frequent TV guest and hosted an arts program on Channel 4 called Journeys Into the Outside. In 1996, Spitting Image mocked the song “Common People” with a performance.
When Michael Jackson presented himself as a Christ figure at the 1996 BRIT Awards while performing “Earth Song,” encircled by children and a rabbi, Jarvis Cocker took offense. During the performance, Jarvis Cocker and his friend Peter Mansell stormed the stage, and Cocker waggled his bottom at the crowd. Police seized Jarvis Cocker on suspicion of assault. Comedian and ex-solicitor Bob Mortimer accompanied him and acted as his legal counsel. Free of any charges, Jarvis Cocker was let go. A £30,000 waxwork figure of Jarvis Cocker was installed at Rock Circus, and sales of Pulp’s albums skyrocketed after the incident.
For his 2003 band, Relaxed Muscle, Jarvis Cocker went by the name Darren Spooner. Jarvis Cocker released his first self-titled solo album in November 2006. In the subsequent year, he made an appearance on Pocket Symphony, by Air. Jarvis Cocker programmed a wide range of performances, including Devo, Motorhead, and Roky Erikson, for the 2007 Meltdown Festival at London’s Southbank Centre.
Additional Difficulties, which included the singles “Angela” and “Girls Like It Too,” was released by Jarvis Cocker in May of 2009. Steve Albini handled the album’s production. Several side projects and collaborations have been undertaken by Jarvis Cocker. He sang a duet with Lush’s Miki Berenyi on their 1996 album Lovelife. A lot of tracks from The All Seeing I’m album Pickled Eggs & Sherbert were written by him as well. Jarvis Cocker has sung alongside luminaries such as Nancy Sinatra and Marianne Faithfull.
In his personal life, Jarvis Cocker was married to Camille Bidault-Waddington, who he met and married in Paris. Albert, their son, was born in April 2003. In 2009, Camille and Jarvis divorced amicably.
Normal Folks versus. Nonstop Partiers! In honor of BBC Music Day 2018, former Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker will compete against Happy Mondays’ Bez in a special episode of “Bargain Hunt.”
To celebrate the fourth annual BBC Music Day, an episode of the show will air in September in which amateur antique hunters compete against one another to make a profit. Candida Doyle and Rowetta Idah will be joining Jarvis and Bez, two of the most beloved British indie personalities of the Nineties, on ‘Bargain Hunt. It’s part of the wide range of festivities planned for BBC shows and the general public on September 28 to celebrate BBC Music Day.
Jarvis Cocker has spent the better part of his life as a musician. He spent twenty of them as a member of Pulp, a band with whom he had many of the rewarding experiences available to a lead singer. In a heady time bookended by “Common People” which became a touchstone hymn at their Glastonbury headline slot in 1995, the band went from being feted by John Peel to being ignored through the protracted Dole Years and eventually became the country’s slowest overnight hit. At this time period, Jarvis transformed from the archetypal outsider to a national treasure.
In a world when rock ‘n’ roll was controlled by reductive cliché, he brought a unique, literary wit to the pop charts and made an original splash. With the success of Pulp, Jarvis went into semi-retirement, relocating to Paris with his new wife and child. He would occasionally make media appearances to discuss Outsider Art, Scott Walker, or other pet causes, and he would also pen songs for other artists. The major stuff always seems to come around, though, as he himself said.
And Jarvis had to face the fact that he was unprepared for anything beyond the world of show business. So he went back to making songs for himself to sing. In October 2008, Jarvis made his broadcasting debut when he filled in for Stephen Merchant on BBC Radio 6 Music. In January 2010, he debuted his own show titled “Jarvis Cocker’s Sunday Service.”
