Jaren Jackson Jr. Bio

Jaren Walter Jackson Jr., who shares the moniker “the Block Panther” and is also known by his initials JJJ, was born on September 15, 1999. He is a professional basketball player from the United States who currently plays for the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Memphis used the fourth overall choice in the 2018 NBA draft to select him. He was his team’s first pick overall.

Following his selection to his first NBA All-Star squad in 2023, he went on to earn the award for Defensive Player of the Year in the same academic year. Throughout two straight seasons, Jackson has averaged the most blocks per game in the league. The Michigan State Spartans were his collegiate basketball team, and he played for them. Jaren began his high school education at Park Tudor School, which is located in and around Indianapolis.

He spent three years playing for the varsity team, during which time he averaged ten points, six rebounds, and three blocks per game. While he was a student at Park Tudor, Jackson was a winner of two IHSAA state basketball titles. Trevon Bluiett, who would go on to become a successful basketball player at Xavier University and a professional player in the future, was one of his teammates.

After that, he moved to La Lumiere School in La Porte, Indiana, for his senior year. It was there that he became acquainted with Jordan Poole and began playing for the school’s highly competitive team. Jaren Jackson Jr. announced on September 15, 2016, that he intends to play under Tom Izzo at Detroit State University. On November 9, 2016, he entered his signature on the letter of intent. In his first game at the college level, which took place on November 10, 2017, Jackson had a season-high 13 rebounds and 13 points in a comprehensive victory against North Florida by a score of 98–66.

It was four days later that he scored a season-high 19 points in a game against the top-ranked Duke Blue Devils, which they won 88–81. Jackson had a career-high eight blocks and 11 points in a victory against Rutgers on December 5th, which resulted in a score of 62–52. The next day, he dominated Southern Utah by scoring 17 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, which was another career best for him. The game ended with a score of 88–63. While leading his team to an 87–74 victory over Illinois on January 22, 2018, Jackson not only scored a season-high 21 points but also grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked 6 shots.

His career-high 27 points came on February 13, when he led his team to a resounding victory against Minnesota by a score of 87–57. After the regular season for Michigan State, he was honored with three awards: the Defensive Player of the Year award from the Big Ten, the Freshman of the Year award, the All-Freshman Team award from the Big Ten, and the All-Big Ten Third Team award. Jackson made his announcement on April 2 that he will be participating in the 2018 NBA draft. At the time, he was seen as a possible lottery pick of the highest ranking.

The Memphis Grizzlies picked Jackson with the fourth overall choice in the 2018 NBA draft on June 21, 2018. This was Jackson’s first selection in the draft. By the terms of the rookie scale, he signed a multi-year deal with the Grizzlies on July 1, 2018. Due to a severe bruise that he sustained on his right thigh on March 29, 2019, Jackson was unable to participate in any activity for the balance of the season.

In a game against the Milwaukee Bucks that ended in a defeat by a score of 127–114, Jackson scored a career-high 43 points on December 13, 2019, including nine three-pointers, which equaled a franchise record that had been already established by Mike Miller in 2007. Jackson received a one-game suspension without pay on January 30, 2020, for leaving the bench during an argument between the Memphis Grizzlies and the New York Knicks. The incident occurred on the day of the game.

In a victory against the Denver Nuggets by a score of 104–96 which took place on January 28, Jackson got a career-high seven blocks. Jackson sustained a torn meniscus in his left knee on August 4, 2020, during a winless game against the New Orleans Pelicans that was held in the Bubble. It was anticipated that Jackson would miss the rest of the 2019–20 season as a result of the injury. On December 16, 2020, the Grizzlies announced that they had fully used the team option that was available to them for Jackson.

While playing for the Los Angeles Clippers on April 21, 2021, Jackson made his comeback and finished with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks. However, the Clippers were able to defeat him. In a victory against the Portland Trail Blazers by a score of 130–128 two days later, Jackson scored a season-high 23 points in the game. Following a string of victories in play-in tournaments, the Memphis Grizzlies have officially qualified for the postseason for the first time since 2017.

When they were playing in the first round of the playoffs, they were up against the top-seeded Utah Jazz. In the fourth game of the postseason, which was defeated by a score of 120–113, Jackson scored a career-high 21 points on May 31. At the end of the series, the Grizzlies would come out on the losing end, losing all five games. On October 18, 2021, Jackson extended his contract with the Grizzlies by signing a four-year deal for 105 million dollars. During a victory against the Los Angeles Lakers on January 9, 2022, Jackson not only matched a career-high with 12 rebounds but also scored 21 points. The game ended with a score of 127–119.

Jackson had a total of 12 points and seven blocks in the opening game of the first round of the playoffs, which took place on April 16 and was a defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves from a score of 130–117. Overtaking Marc Gasol’s six blocks in a playoff game on May 13, 2013, his seven blocks established a new record for the Grizzlies franchise in terms of the most blocks in a playoff game. Jackson finished with 18 points, 14 rebounds, and two blocks in the Grizzlies’ 114–106 victory against the Timberwolves in Game 6 of the series. The Grizzlies ultimately prevailed over the Timberwolves in six games.
