Janet was born on August 5, 1961. When she was six years old, her family relocated to York. Once known as the “Queen Anne Grammar School for Girls,” Janet attended this institution. She first found employment in a bar at York Minster called the “Olde Starre Inn.” Janet’s interest in acting was sparked by a visit to the “York Theatre Royal,” where she saw the play “She Stoops to Conquer.” She was a waiter in the theater. When Janet was working as a barista, English actor and filmmaker Gary Oldman walked in and recommended that she attend the prestigious ‘Royal Academy of Dramatic Art’ (RADA).

Her performance as DI Amy Foster, a woman worker terrified of her upcoming retirement life, in the BBC-HBO coproduction ‘Five Days’ garnered her a nomination for the ‘Royal Television Society Award’ for ‘Best Actor – Female.’
In the 2009 film Into the Storm (also known as “Churchill at War”), Janet played Clementine Churchill, Winston Churchill’s wife. For her performance as Mary Stuart in Friedrich Schiller’s play, she received her second “Tony” Award nomination. In the 2011 drama film “Albert Nobbs,” Glenn Close portrayed the title role, and Janet had a small cameo. Hubert Page, her on-screen persona, was depicted as a male coworker of Albert’s at a hotel; the two were shown passing as male in order to flee their own unhappy marriages.
Janet has played a number of characters based on real people, including American novelist, critic, and political activist Mary McCarthy in the 2012 film Hannah Arendt. After that, her portrayal of Jacquetta of Luxembourg, Countess Rivers in the Netflix series ‘The White Queen’ garnered her a ‘Golden Globe nomination. “The Honourable Woman,” a British political spy-thriller miniseries, starred Janet as “Dame Julia Walsh,” the chief of the “Secret Intelligence Agency” in 2014. On the CBS comedy-drama series Battle Creek, she portrayed Commander Kim Guziewicz on a regular basis.
Janet was cast in the role of “Edith Prior” from Veronica Roth’s “Insurgent,” the second novel in the “Divergent” trilogy. In the third episode, “Allegiant,” her character appeared again, although this time it was through repurposed historical video. In 2016, based on Alan Judd’s novel The Kaiser’s Final Kiss, Janet portrayed the real-life Princess Hermine Reuss of Greiz in the romantic war drama The Exception. In the 2018 Netflix series based on the Marvel character Jessica Jones, Janet played Alisa Jones, Jessica’s foster mother. In 2008, Janet was honored for her work in the British entertainment sector by being named an “Officer of the Order of the British Empire.”
She co-wrote the screenplay for the 2002 thriller The Intent and produced the 2016 drama Paint It Black.
