James Stewart Tolkan is a well-known American actor who was born on June 20th, 1931. In the films Back to the Future and Back to the Future Part II, as well as Back to the Future Part III, he played the characters of Mr. Strickland and Marshal Strickland, respectively. These performances have brought him the most fame. Other parts in films such as “Love and Death”, “Top Gun”, “Masters of the Universe”, and “Dick Tracy” stand out as particularly notable. Tolkan was the son of Dale Nichols and Ralph M. Tolkan, a cattle trader, and was born in Calumet, Michigan. His father’s name was Tolkan.
His educational background includes time spent at the University of Iowa, Coe College, the Actors Studio, and Eastern Arizona College. Tolkan participated in the United States Navy aboard the USS Sandoval; however, he had a problem with his heart, and he was released from the service after a year for reasons related to his health. Tolkan is most recognized for his performance as the authoritarian Hill Valley High School principal, Gerald Strickland, in the 1985 film Back to the Future. In this film, Tolkan’s character derisively refers to Marty McFly, his father, and Biff Tannen as “slackers.” In the 1989 sequel Back to the Future Part II, in which anonymous gang members conduct a drive-by attack on him in a dystopian 1985, he repeated the part he had played in the first film. He again refers to the criminals as “slackers” when he fires back at them.
In the movie “Back to the Future Part III,” which was released in 1990, he portrayed the role of Mr. Strickland’s grandpa, Chief Marshal James Strickland. In the 1991 animated series spin-off, James Tolkan would play the part of Strickland once again, along with the character’s forefathers and descendants. This role would be played by the spin-off.
In addition, he is recognized for his appearances as an FBI agent in the film WarGames and as Stinger, the no-nonsense commanding officer of the USS Enterprise’s embarked F-14 squadron in the 1986 box office success Top Gun. Both of these performances brought him widespread recognition. In the movie “Prince of the City,” directed by Sidney Lumet, he played the part of District Attorney Polito, who was icy and determined. In the film Armed and Dangerous from 1986, he portrayed the role of Lou Brackman, a groveling and evasive union treasurer. In the film Masters of the Universe, which was released in 1987, he played the role of Detective Lubic. In the Woody Allen comedy Love and Death, he played not just Napoleon but also a character that resembled Napoleon quite closely. In the 1990 film Dick Tracy, directed by Warren Beatty, he made an appearance as “Numbers,” Big Boy Caprice’s accountant. In the 1973 film Serpico, he had a minor but important appearance as a police officer who angrily accuses Officer Serpico of having a homosexual affair with another police officer in a men’s room. His character does this while shouting at Officer Serpico.
Tolkan has appeared as a special guest on a number of different television episodes, some of which include Naked City, Remington Steele, Miami Vice, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. In the A&E television series A Nero Wolfe Mystery, he was a member of the repertory cast and performed more than a dozen different characters. In addition, he directed two episodes of the show. The most recent post that Lea Thompson has made on Instagram brings us back in time.
On Friday, the 61-year-old actress celebrated Back to the Future Day in grand fashion by posting a series of retro images on her Instagram account. The pictures included her co-stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, James Tolkan, and Thomas F. Wilson. The unofficial fan holiday is celebrated every year on October 21, which is the same day when Fox’s character Marty McFly travels to 2015 in the DeLorean in Back to the Future: Part II. Other days included in Back to the Future include October 26 and November 12.
On stage at New York Comic-Con earlier this month, Lloyd and Fox, 61, met for the first time in 37 years, just after the legendary film directed by Robert Zemeckis was released for the first time. It was their first public reunion since appearing on Josh Gad’s viral YouTube series, Reunited Apart, in the year 2020, when they repeated the same performance. The two actors spoke about the casting selections that were made as well as their initial experiences working together on set. During their conversation, Fox joked that he needed to “watch my a–” because of how brilliant his costar was.
When it came to performing with Lloyd, Fox noted that “all I had to do was react.” It was revealed on Friday that Back to the Future: The Musical would be the most recent musical to premiere on Broadway this summer. The announcement came on a Friday, which was also one of the three days Marty journeyed through time. After having its world debut in the West End in 2021 and going on to win the Olivier Award for best new musical in 2022, the play will begin preview performances in New York’s Winter Garden Theatre on June 30, 2023, with the official opening night scheduled for August 3, 2023.
Roger Bart, winner of the Tony Award for his performance as Doc Brown, will take on the role once again, and the original Doc Brown, Lloyd, will appear with Bart in a new video promoting the Broadway run. In the video clip, he made a jest by saying, “I have a feeling you’ll be at the Winter Garden Theatre for a long time.”
“Just let it wash over me and take it in,” she said. Fox said, “I thought he was absolutely brilliant.” “That was the whole point: to be with Chris and to let it be Chris, and to take pleasure in it… It was quite exciting. I always looked forward to working with him since I knew it was going to be a productive and enjoyable day. Thompson shared with her Instagram followers the following message: “Today is apparently one of the #backtothefuture days.” “I have had so many amazing moments with the wonderful cast, and particularly with you!!! I am so thankful for the years we have spent together!!! people who approach me to talk about their experiences seeing the movie and give their thoughts. This is such a wonderful and honorable opportunity. Many thanks to you! Also, wishing you a good #bttfday and a wonderful weekend.
