On December 31st, 1953, in Boston, Massachusetts, William James Remar was brought into the world by his parents, Elizabeth Mary and S. Roy Remar. Both of his parents had careers in the legal field; his mother worked in the field of mental health, while his father was an attorney. Acting was one of the subjects he studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City. 1984, he wed Atsuko Itsuki, and the couple now has two children together.
James Remar is a well-known American actor and voice artist who has starred in various prominent roles throughout his career in cinema and television.
He performed the central Harry Morgan role in the television crime drama ‘Dexter’ for nearly seven years. Remar is most known for his recurring appearances in television series such as “The Huntress,” “Total Security,” and “Black Lightning.” In addition to that, he was a significant cast member on the television shows “Sex and the City,” “Jericho,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “State of Affairs.” Although Remar has participated in a significant number of television series, it was his cinema career that brought him widespread recognition at the beginning of his career.
He is well known for his portrayal of harsh and evil roles, and he has played many notable characters in movies such as “The Warriors,” “48 Hrs.,” “The Cotton Club,” and “Miracle on 34th Street.” His performance as “Ace Speck, Butch Pooch” in the movie “Django Unchained” by Quentin Tarantino solidified his status as a very accomplished actor in the Hollywood industry.
Throughout his career, Remar has provided the voices of various characters on television and has been nominated for awards in several categories. In 2014, he was a part of the team that took home the BTVA People’s Choice Voice Acting Award for their work on “The Legend of Korra.” Late in the 1970s, James Remar launched his career in the entertainment industry by making his screen debut in the drama film ‘On the Yard,’ released in 1978. The year after that, he appeared as the villain in the criminal action movie ‘The Warrior.
The film was an adaptation of Sol Yurick’s book of the same name, played the part of the character ‘Ajax,’ which was a hard one since he had to depict a sexually aggressive and out-of-control character. It was his first collaboration with director Walter Hill, with whom he would go on to work again in another film three years later. Remar played yet another antagonistic character in the subsequent picture that Walter Hill directed, titled “48 Hrs.”
His character ‘Albert Ganz’ was a maniac in this production. Even though movie was an action comedy, nothing was amusing or entertaining about Remar’s role. After the success of these two films, Remar established a reputation for convincingly playing unlikable characters with élan. Another one of Remar’s villainous roles was in the American crime drama film ‘The Cotton Club’ from 1984. He performed “Dutch Schultz,” a legendary Jewish-American gangster who operated in the New York City region in real life.
In the cult classic science fiction horror movie “Aliens,” released in 1986, Remar was initially cast as “Corporal Hicks.” Still, he was ultimately replaced by Michael Connell Biehn owing to allegations that he was a drug user. In 1996, the Australian-American superhero picture ‘The Phantom’ allowed Remar to continue depicting nefarious characters in films when he cast him in the part of ‘Quill.’
The following year, he took over for Christopher Lambert like Raiden in the Mortal Kombat sequel, which was the sequel to the first Mortal Kombat film. During the next two decades, Remar had parts in many successful cinemas; yet the value of his performances gradually declined. During this period, he had roles in several films, including “2 Fast 2 Furious,” “Blade: Trinity,” “The Unborn,” and “X-Men: First Class.”
In the early 2010s, he was cast in two distinct but significant parts in the revisionist Western film ‘Django Unchained’ directed by Quentin Tarantino. In the movie, he appeared as ‘Ace Speck’ and ‘Butch Pooch,’ alongside stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington, and Samuel L. Jackson. James Remar is yet another well-known face from the world of television. He has been a guest on many different television series, both in critical parts and in supporting ones. He made his first television appearance in the 1981 season of ‘Hill Street Blues’.
In the years that followed, he had guest appearances on a variety of television programs and films, including “The Mystic Warrior,” “Miami Vice,” “The Equalizer,” “Deadly Nightmares,” and “Crime Story.” In the television program “Total Security” from 1997, Remar portrayed “Frank Cisco,” one of the leading characters.
In the television series “The Huntress,” a drama about a criminal investigation, he played the part of “Tiny Bellows,” which is another significant role. Remar played the role of ‘Harry Morgan,’ the adoptive father of the main character Dexter Morgan, in the television murder mystery series ‘Dexter’ for over seven years.
Because of his performance in the part, he was considered for a nomination for the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor. In addition to that, he has provided his voice for several animated series, including “Ben 10: Ultimate Alien,” “Beware the Batman,” “The Legend of Korra,” and “Young Justice.” The superhero television series ‘Black Lightning,’ based on DC Comics, counts him among the prominent cast members of the show’s ensemble.
