In Northridge, California, on July 14, 1961, was born Jackie Earle Haley. His father, the actor Haven Earle Haley, had a role as a judge in the Martin Scorsese film Casino. Haley was raised in a creative household and began acting at a young age. In the years that followed, he was featured in an array of advertising. American actor, director, and screenwriter Jackie Earle Haley. In particular, his portrayals as Ronald James McGorvey in “Little Children” and Walter Kovacs/Rorschach in “Watchmen” won him acclaim.
Haley grew up in California, so she had an early introduction to the film business. He made his acting debut in the role of Jamie Boyle on the animated sitcom Wait Till Your Father Gets Home and has since starred in a number of advertisements. It wasn’t long before Haley made his acting debut in the action movie The Outside Man, in which he played the role of Eric. He’s one of the few famous kids from his era who managed to keep his fame as an adult. He made his acting debut in the first installment of “The Bad News Bears” when he was only 13 years old, playing a young criminal.
After a few years away from performing, he came back with ‘All the King’s Men,’ a political drama he produced and directed. The role of a suburban pedophile that Haley played in the film “Little Children” was nominated for an Academy Award. After that, he played Rorschach in Zack Snyder’s ‘Watchmen’ as a vigilante. Haley has also made appearances on other TV shows. He voiced Gill Waterman in the animated comedy series Gravedale High, Guerrero in the action-adventure series Human Target, and Odin Quincannon in the fantasy drama series Preacher. Currently, he may be seen in “The Tick” as the villainous The Terror.
The TV version of his 1979 picture “Breaking Away” was his first major performance in front of a television audience, but it didn’t last very long. This ABC comedy-drama ran from November 29, 1980, to January 10, 1981, and featured Haley in his original role as Moocher. In 1983’s Losin’ It, a comedy film also starring Tom Cruise and Shelley Long, he made his big screen comeback after an absence of four years.
There is talk that Haley and Johnny Depp hung out during the ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ auditions when they were casting for the film. After seeing Depp in action, Craven cast him as Glen Lantz instead of Haley. Haley persisted in her career throughout the 1980s and into the early 1990s despite this setback.
Both the 1981 TV movie “Every Stray Dog and Kid” and the 1985 teen movie “The Zoo Gang” featured him in supporting roles as bullies. He appeared in guest roles on several popular TV series, such as American Playhouse, Whiz Kids, MacGyver, and Murder, She Wrote. It was about this time that Haley began playing more mature parts and abandoning his youthful character.
Haley’s second telefilm was filmed in 1990. The original version of Oh, No! Not THEM! was written as a pilot for an American adaptation of the British show The Young Ones. The event, however, was never broadcast on television. He also began his role as Gill Waterman on NBC’s animated comedy Gravedale High that same year. Although the show only lasted for 13 episodes before it was canceled, it has now achieved cult status.
Dollman, a 1991 science fiction action film, featured him as the Earth-born bad guy Brick Bardo had to deal with. Haley made an appearance in the 1992 cyberpunk flick Nemesis. Before taking a lengthy sabbatical from acting, his last film was the 1993 action slasher Maniac Cop III: Badge of Silence. Haley was last seen on TV in 1993. He uprooted Alamo City and entered the commercial production industry. Over a decade and a role in the political drama “All the King’s Men” later, the break was finally over. In 2008, he played Bob Jasperson in a cinematic adaptation of Roy Freirich’s novel Winged Creatures and had a small role in the comedy picture Semi-Pro.
Then in 2009, he was in Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’s graphic novel Watchmen. As the film’s narrator and primary plot mover, Walter Kovacs/Rorschach (Haley) is effectively the film’s protagonist. In Martin Scorsese’s ‘Shutter Island,’ a neo-noir psychological thriller released in 2010, he co-starred with Leonardo DiCaprio. In the Fox action drama series Human Target, Haley made her television return. He has played the title role of The Terror in the Amazon Prime Video series The Tick since 2016. Odin Quincannon, the main bad guy in the first season of AMC’s ‘Preacher,’ was also played by him. His debut feature film as director was the 2015 crime thriller “Criminal Activities,” which starred John Travolta, Michael Pitt, Dan Stevens, Rob Brown, and Haley. His most recent role was as Sayre in “The Dark Tower”. The future cyberpunk action movie “Alita: Battle Angel” will star him.
