J.K. Rowling Bio

Joanne Rowling was born on July 31, 1965. She authored the seven-book children’s fantasy series Harry Potter between 1997 and 2007. Over 500 million copies of the books in the series have been sold worldwide; they have been translated into at least 70 different languages, and they have spawned an international film and video game franchise. In 2012, she released The Casual Vacancy, her first novel intended for an adult audience. Under the pen name Robert Galbraith, she has created the bestselling Cormoran Strike mystery series.

Rowling, a native of Yate, earned a French degree from the University of Exeter in 1987 and started a side career as a bilingual secretary. Her mother’s death from multiple sclerosis occurred later that year, and the Harry Potter characters came to her as she was waiting for a delayed train. Rowling’s relocation to Portugal predated the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by seven years. She tied the knot, had a kid, moved to Scotland after her marriage ended in divorce, and eventually went on to get her certification to teach. She wrote while raising her daughter alone on welfare and grieving the loss of her mother.

In 2008, she had already been recognized by Forbes as the highest-paid writer in the world. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was the last book in Rowling’s Harry Potter series. In the novel, the protagonist Harry Potter is a young boy who attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and fights the evil wizard Lord Voldemort. Death and the battle between good and evil are the series’ overarching themes.

It draws inspiration from a variety of sources, including the coming-of-age bildungsroman, as well as school stories, fairy tales, and Christian allegories. The series brought fantasy back to the children’s market, inspired many copycats, and has a dedicated fanbase. The reviews have been more contradictory. Rowling has been called traditional by some commentators, and retrograde in her representation of gender and socioeconomic division by others. Harry Potter was also the subject of religious discourse.

Rowling’s work has been widely recognized. For her literary and charitable work, she was honored with the British Empire Order and the Companions of Honour. The success of Harry Potter helped her become wealthy and famous, which she has put toward various political and charitable endeavors. She established the Volant Charitable Trust in honor of her mother and co-founded the nonprofit organization Lumos. Rowling’s philanthropic efforts are concentrated on aiding sick children and mothers. She has opposed Scottish independence and Brexit and has donated to the British Labour Party. Since late 2019, she has shared her opinions on transgender persons and their civic rights. Some feminist groups and LGBT advocacy groups have condemned these as transphobic, but other feminist groups and individuals have defended them.

Initially, she enrolled at Wyedean Comprehensive School and College, but in 1982, she decided to go to the University of Exeter instead. To appease her parents, she enrolled in French classes. She had hoped to major in English literature, but her parents dissuaded her, seeing it as a dead end. She completed her undergraduate studies in French and classics in 1987. After finishing college, she went to work as a researcher for Amnesty International and has been a supporter of the organization ever since.

Rowling’s dedication to her craft was unwavering. She planned to keep using her spare time to compose new tales. She had the inspiration for Harry Potter on a train travel home to London in 1990. She would loosely model some of Harry’s experiences in the novel after her own, such as the death of a parent.

Rowling went through a rough patch in December of 1990. Multiple sclerosis took the life of Anne’s mother. The difficulties persisted. She got married and divorced in 1991, the year she relocated to Portugal to teach English. She kept on writing Harry Potter, drawing on her own struggles to shape the young wizard’s personality after her mother’s death.

Her firstborn, Jessica, was born in 1993. She planned to join her younger sister Dianne in Edinburgh. Rowling has said that this period was the lowest point of her life. She was straining to provide for her family while receiving aid. Rowling was inspired by this and kept working on the Harry Potter series.

Her novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published in 1995. The first three chapters were submitted to a literary agent. Rowling was persistent, and she tried again after the first attempt was turned down.

Christopher Little, Rowling’s agent, eventually responded to her letter and requested to read on. Christopher signed on as Rowling’s agent, and the pair submitted Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone to multiple publishing houses. Christopher was able to get a publishing deal with Bloomsbury Children’s Books in 1996.

To expand Harry Potter’s fan base in the United States, Christopher devised a cunning method. He achieved this by bidding on the rights to publish the book. After a competitive bidding process, Scholastic Books accepted an offer from Arthur Levine. Harry Potter first appeared in the United States under the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in September 1998.

It was the recommendation of her publisher that led to her using the pen name J.K. Rowling. Publishers were afraid that revealing that a woman penned the Harry Potter series would hurt the series’ sales. Therefore, Rowling went with the initials J.K. To honor her grandmother, whose name was Kathleen, Rowling substituted a ”K” for a middle name.
