A native Angeleno, Jo-Issa Rae Diop entered the world on January 12, 1985, in the great metropolis of Los Angeles. Dakar, Senegal, is in West Africa, and she and her four siblings all spent significant time there growing up. After that, she and her family relocated to Inglewood, California, where her father, Dr. Abdoulaye Diop, kept up his medical practice. She has been a Californian all her life. A few years down the road, Issa enrolled at Stanford University to earn a degree in American-African studies. While in college, she was active in the university’s theatre department, where she acted in, directed, and wrote for a number of productions. She also worked as a music video producer. Next, she went to the New York Film Academy to take some classes. In her dorm room at Stanford University, she began writing the web series Dorm Diaries.
It was an experience she had as a kid that sparked the idea for her online series. Since comedic writing was her forte, she had mastered the ability to make even heavy topics sound funny and snarky. The reason for this was that comedic works were her absolute favorites. This was the start of her work as a storyteller and filmmaker. In 2011, when Issa was just a freshman in college, she came up with the idea for the humorous web series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.
Issa took on many roles as the comedy series was being made, including creator, showrunner, director, producer, and actor. She primarily portrayed J, as a contact center worker who struggles to find her place among her coworkers. Issa built J’s character on her own childhood experiences in order to empathize with J’s plight as she faced discrimination and antagonism from her staff.
J shares her life experiences within the context of the show’s plot. She describes in great detail her hatred for her coworker Nina and the ways in which Nina has humiliated her in front of others. J uses her gift of poetry to gain popularity at work, just as Issa did when she was in high school. In 2011, the same year the show premiered online, Issa created a channel on YouTube. In addition, season two was uploaded on the video-sharing website YouTube for fans to enjoy. Critics were overwhelmingly enthusiastic about the second season, praising the excellent acting and witty dialogue. In 2012, the Shorty Awards named the show the Best Web Show of the year.
Issa did a fantastic job of making use of the various social media outlets at her disposal to present her audience with a rich and varied selection of written and visual pieces. She also uses her YouTube channel to advocate for and support up-and-coming artists from underrepresented communities in both the literary and filmmaking realms.
