Having been born on January 5, 1961, Iris Luella DeMent is a musician and singer-songwriter from the United States of America. The musical style of DeMent incorporates aspects of several genres, including gospel, country, and folk. She is the recipient of two Grammy Award nominations that she has received. The fourteenth and youngest child of Pat DeMent (1910–1992) and Flora Mae (1918–2011), DeMent was born in Paragould, Arkansas. His parents were Pat DeMent and Flora Mae.
There was a time when Iris’s mother had fantasized about moving to Nashville and beginning a career as a singer. Her singing voice served as a source of motivation and influence for her youngest daughter, Iris, even though she put those goals on waiting to get married.[4]: The Pentecostal faith was the foundation of DeMent’s upbringing. When she was three years old, her family relocated from Arkansas to the central region of Los Angeles.

A clip from the last episode of the television series Northern Exposure, which aired on CBS on July 26, 1995, included the song “Our Town” being played at the closing scene. With the protest song “Wasteland of the Free” included, it is DeMent’s most politically charged piece of music. It discusses a variety of subjects, including sexual assault, religion, government policy, and Vietnam. During the live performance of the Much Later with Jools live special that took place in 1997, DeMent sang the duet “Bell Bottomed Tear.” In the year 1998, the rock band Goo Goo Dolls gave her the name “Iris” as the title of their song.
John Rzeznik, a singer and composer, had started writing the words to the song, but he was having trouble deciding what to call it. When he pulled up the LA Weekly, he saw that DeMent was performing in town. He thought her name was lovely, and as a result, he decided to name it after her.
When John Prine released his album Despite Ourselves in 1999, she collaborated with him on four duets, one of which being the album’s title tune. The year 2000 saw her make an appearance in the movie Songcatcher, in which she played the role of Rose Gentry and also contributed to the music.
