British actor Ian McKellen, whose full name is Sir Ian Murray McKellen and who was born on May 25, 1939, in Burnley, Lancashire, England, is most known for his work with the Royal Shakespeare Company and for his varied filmography. McKellen was knighted in the Order of the Garter in 2002. While McKellen was a student at St. Catharine’s College in Cambridge, John Barton, who would go on to become a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, often directed him in his acting roles. After completing his undergraduate studies and getting his bachelor’s degree in 1961, McKellen made his début in the film A Man for All Seasons, which was directed by Robert Bolt.
McKellen gained both popular and critical praise with his performances as both William Shakespeare’s Richard II and Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II during the 1969 Edinburgh Festival. McKellen had been acting steadily throughout the 1960s. In 1971, he collaborated with other performers to establish the Actors’ Company, a cooperative in which all members had an equal voice in the selection and casting of plays as well as the hiring of directors. 1974 was the year he parted ways with the band to accept an offer from Barton to join the Royal Shakespeare Company.
McKellen was a talented actor who portrayed a wide variety of parts in plays written by writers such as Anton Chekhov, Frank Wedekind, and others. These roles ranged from Shakespearean to current times, as well as many roles in between. Despite the fact that his interpretations were usually contentious, there was no denying the great skill he had as an actor. Laurence Olivier Awards were bestowed to him in recognition of his efforts in the London productions of plays such as Richard III (1979), Bent (1979), and Wild Honey (1984).
In 1981, McKellen was honored with a Tony Award for the outstanding performance he gave in the role of Antonio Salieri in the Broadway production of Amadeus. In addition to directing a number of plays, he also wrote and performed a one-man act titled Acting Shakespeare. In addition to his work on stage, McKellen has also appeared in a number of films, the most notable of which are a film adaptation of David Hare’s Plenty (1985) and Richard III (1995), an adaptation of Shakespeare’s play that is set in a fictionalized version of England in the 1930s; McKellen also co-wrote the screenplay for Richard III. Both of these films are notable for McKellen’s performances.
In the film Gods and Monsters from 1998, he played the role of filmmaker James Whale, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for the first time, in the category of best actor. Later in his career, he performed the role of Gandalf in the film trilogy The Lord of the Rings (2001, 2002, and 2003), which was adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy novel (1954–55). Because of his role in the film from 2001, he was nominated for another Oscar (this time in the supporting actor category). Later on, McKellen played the part of Gandalf once more in a cinematic adaptation of Tolkien’s The Hobbit that was released in 2012, 2013, and 2014. (1937).
Other film credits for McKellen include the X-Men franchise (2000, 2003, 2006, and 2014), in which he played the supervillain Magneto, and The Da Vinci Code (2006). Mr. Holmes (2015), a character study about a nonagenarian Sherlock Holmes attempting to solve a case that has bedeviled him for 30 years, was a showcase for McKellen’s sensitivity and exactitude as an actor. The film was about the endeavors of a nonagenarian Sherlock Holmes to solve the case.
In the musical Beauty and the Beast, which debuted in 2017, he had a role. In the television comedy series Vicious (2013–16), which McKellen also appeared in, he and Derek Jacobi portrayed a homosexual couple who bickered with one another but ended up loving one another. In 2019, McKellen acted with Helen Mirren in the suspense film The Good Liar, and he also had an appearance in Cats, an adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s immensely popular Broadway musical. Both of these films were released in 2019.
McKellen was a prominent champion of gay rights despite the fact that he was gay. In 1979, he was given the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), and in 1991, he was given the title of Knight Bachelor. In 2007, he was elevated to the position of Companion of Honor within the Order of the Companions of Honour. The actor who played Magneto in X-Men argues that his close friend, the actress Frances Barber, who went to Wolverhampton Grammar School, is the reason he can never get rid of his Black Country accent.
Theatergoers in Wolverhampton will get to see one of the most anticipated performances on stage this year as Ian presents his own interpretation of a pantomime dame in Mother Goose, which is exclusively running in Wolverhampton and nowhere else in the Midlands. There is a lot of laughter, and I know that people in Wolverhampton like having a good time laughing. I started out in the tiniest room in the building, which was upstairs, and worked my way up to the largest space, which is now called the Grand Theatre. I have performed in every room in the Civic Hall. Wolverhampton is one of my favorite cities, and I can’t wait till we bring this concert there.
