As part of their relocation to Tennessee, the Oilers played their final game in Houston in 1996. By 1997, the city was already seeking for a new club to replace them. In order to prevent them from leaving town, the city sued them for millions of dollars. However, the suit had no effect because the Oilers had already made up their minds. A new National Football League club was brought to Houston by billionaire Bob McNair and his partner Steve Patterson in an attempt to revitalize the city.
Patton was then appointed as the leader of the newly formed group. With a visit to the NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, they received an immediate morale boost. When it came to selecting the next team’s home city, Tagliabue narrowed his options down to three options: Cleveland, Houston, and Los Angeles.
In 1998, Tagliabue, who had promised Cleveland an NFL team after the Browns departed the city in 1995, delivered on his promise when he declared that Cleveland would indeed be the NFL’s 31st team. While it was initially anticipated that a team would move to Cleveland to keep the NFL at 30 teams, Patterson was delighted to learn that Cleveland would once again have its own team for the 1998 season, bringing the total to 31 teams and Tagliabue announcing his desire to add a 32nd team to either Houston, Los Angeles, or Toronto.
Even while Patterson was not overly concerned about Toronto joining the NFL, he was extremely concerned about Los Angeles, and when entertainment mogul Michael Ovitz revealed that he would head a privately financed $750 million stadium project in Carson, California, the dread became a reality. Paul Tagliabue indicated in late October 1998 that he would make a decision by April 1999, and that the 32nd NFL team would be the result of that choice. Real estate entrepreneur Ed Roski offered a 68,000-seat stadium within the walls of the Los Angeles Coliseum, putting Ovitz in the middle of a money war in his own hometown. NFL owners voted 29-2 on March 16, 1999, allowing the expansion franchise to be situated in Los Angeles if they could put together an appropriate ownership team and stadium agreement by September 15, 1999. After returning in April, NFL executives discovered that the two teams had not come together, that the city had not allowed tax monies to be spent on the stadium, and that neither party was equipped to build the building that Houston had promised for the previous six months.
On the morning of October 6, 1999, the owners of the National Football League voted to give the 32nd franchise to the city of Houston by a vote of 29 to 0. Afterward, things began to move at breakneck speed as they sought a new name for the team, developed a new logo, and eventually signed former Washington Redskins General Manager Charley Casserole as Executive Vice President and General Manager in January 2000.
It was during that year that they witnessed the first ceremonial groundbreaking for the new Reliant Stadium, which would go on to become the NFL’s first retractable-roof stadium. In late 2000, the team debuted its new logo and signed former Carolina Panthers head coach and current Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Smith as their first head coach. Smith was the franchise’s first head coach.
The Houston Texans won their first playoff game in team history on January 7th, 2011, defeating the Cincinnati Bengals by a score of 31-10 in the Wild-Card round of the 2011-12 NFL Playoffs. It was the Texans’ first playoff victory in team history. The information was obtained on January 7, 2012. prior to the Ravens’ 20–13 semifinal victory over the Patriots.
