Holly Madison is an American television personality who was born Holly Sue Cullen on December 23, 1979. She is most known as a former girlfriend of Hugh Hefner and for her role in the reality television show The Girls Next Door. In addition, she was the star of her own reality series called Holly’s World, which aired from 2009 to 2011. The first of her books, Down the Rabbit Hole, was published in 2015 and is a memoir of her time spent living in the Playboy Mansion and her romance with Hefner. The second of her books, The Vegas Diaries: Romance, Rolling the Dice, and the Road to Reinvention, was published in 2016.
Holly Sue Cullen was the woman who gave birth to Madison in Astoria, Oregon. When she was two years old, her family relocated to Craig, Alaska, which is located on Prince of Wales Island. When she was in the sixth grade, her family moved back to St. Helens, Oregon, from another location. After that, she continued her education at Portland State University for another two years, where she double-majored in psychology and drama. After that, Madison uprooted her life and went to school at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
Madison entered a competition to become a model for Hawaiian Tropic and also worked as a waitress at Hooters to earn money for her college education. As a result of her performance at those establishments, she received invites to the Playboy home. When she was 21 years old, after more than a year of such visits, Madison petitioned Hugh Hefner for permission to move in at the home, and he eventually granted her request. In August of 2001, Madison moved into the Playboy Mansion and officially became one of Hugh Hefner’s girlfriends.
At the time, she was struggling with credit card debt and the possibility of becoming homeless. Hefner had complete control over her funds, mandated a stringent schedule and curfew, and prevented her from taking advantage of possibilities to make money outside of the estate. Madison became his “#1 Girl” in February 2002, after he had broken up with all of his other girlfriends save for two of them. During the time that she spent with Hefner, Madison expressed her desire to wed him and bear his children by stating that she wanted to do so.
Nevertheless, during an interview that took place at the Playmate of the Year luncheon in May 2008, Hefner stated, “I love Holly very much, and I think we’re going to be together for the rest of my life, but marriage isn’t part of my puzzle.” It’s nothing personal; I’ve just never had much success in relationships that led to marriage. When Madison reflected on her time spent in the estate, she stated that her feelings for Hefner were a result of the psychological condition known as Stockholm syndrome. The Girls Next Door was a show that aired on the E! Network that followed the lives of Madison and other residents of the Playboy Mansion.
Despite the fact that Madison was never a Playboy Playmate, Playboy published a nude pictorial of Madison along with her co-stars from The Girls Next Door in the November 2005 issue of the magazine. The cover stories for the editions that were published in September 2006, March 2008, and February 2009 all featured women. In seasons three and four, Madison is shown working at the Playboy studios, first as an intern and then, later, as a junior photo editor.
Her employment there spans both of these seasons. Additionally, she participated in the creation of an assembly of calendars for The Girls Next Door. As the sixth season came to a close in February 2009, she announced her decision to leave the firm altogether since the breakup of her relationship with Hefner had rendered her position “uncomfortable.” Madison announced on October 7, 2008, that her relationship with Hefner had ended. She also stated that she, Bridget Marquardt, and Kendra Wilkinson were “still filming stuff together.” Hefner gave his stamp of approval to the split by stating, “If Holly says it’s over, I guess it’s over.”After then, Madison was one of the former Playmates who revealed their experiences in the documentary series Secrets of Playboy.
Madison and Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman led a “largest bikini parade ever” in May 2009, which broke the record for “largest bikini parade ever” held by Guinness World Records. An event that was planned to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign included “the politician and the former Playboy house bunny joining forces to usher in the city’s summer swimsuit season.” According to the Las Vegas Sun, “the politician and the former Playboy house bunny joined forces to usher in the city’s summer swimsuit season…” The previous record for parade participants, which stood at 250, was smashed by the staggering 281.
In the years that followed, the benchmark was surpassed by occurrences that took place in the Cayman Islands (331), and Brisbane, Australia (357). Peepshow was a burlesque show that took place at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, and Madison was the headliner of the show. After the expiration of Kelly Monaco’s contract for the previous three months, she was hired to take her position. Similarly, Madison’s contract was initially signed for a period of three months, but as a result of the success of the program, it was later extended to cover an entire year.
Holly’s World was Madison’s very own reality show, in which she starred as the main character and focused on her life at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. Madison remarked of her show, “It’s all good-natured and not mean like other reality shows,” and she compared it to other programs. “I’m getting proper co-producer credit for all the work I do behind the camera, so that’s another reason why I’m extremely happy about the new series. This is not a vanity credit in any way. I am beyond ecstatic to acquire new skills from the very best, as well as to take on additional duties. The first episode of the show aired on December 6, 2009, and it lasted for a total of two seasons.
In 2021, Madison discussed some of the negative aspects of the Playboy lifestyle in an interview. These aspects were later discussed in further detail in the 2022 episode of the documentary series Secrets of Playboy that aired on A&E. The show’s second episode, which aired in January 2022, focused on Madison as the main topic of discussion. She stated, among other things, that the Playboy Mansion was “dangerous” and “very cult-like,” and she accused Hefner of manipulating her in order to further her career, going so far as to attempt to offer her quaaludes during their first sexual contact in the summer of 2001. She said this happened in the summer of 2001.
She also said that during their relationship, she had an alcohol addiction and that during that time, Hefner would frequently take photographs of her and his other girlfriends while they were in the state of being naked after having consumed alcohol. According to Madison’s allegations, this gave him the opportunity to employ blackmail in order to keep their relationship intact. She also reiterated her previous charge that she had “Stockholm syndrome” during the time that she was in a relationship with Hefner as well, stating, “I definitely thought I was in love with Hef but it was very Stockholm syndrome, very Stockholm syndrome.”
