Herschel Walker, a retired American football running back who spent 12 seasons in the National Football League, was born on March 3, 1962. He is the Georgia Republican’s choice for the U.S. Senate in 2022. Walker was born to Willis and Christine Walker in Augusta, Georgia. In Wrightsville, Georgia, he was raised. He came from a family of blue-collar workers and was one of seven kids. Walker claimed that he suffered with stuttering and being overweight as a child. His parents encouraged him to avoid rationalizations in daily life. Walker participated in track and field, football, and basketball while a student at Johnson County High School in Wrightsville.
From 1976 to 1979, he was a high school football player for the Johnson County Trojans. He rushed for 3,167 yards in his senior year, which helped the Trojans capture their first state championship. In 1981, he competed on the 4 100 m relay team that won the SEC championship. In 1982, he set a personal best for the 100 meters by running it in 10.23 seconds with the wind at his back. His time for the 100-yard sprint in high school dropped from 9.5 to 9.3 seconds. In 1983, he also ran the 55-meter sprint and finished in 6.11 seconds. Walker was chosen by the American Academy of Achievement as an Athlete-Scholar delegate in June 1980, and in 1981, he was presented with the academy’s Golden Plate Award by Council member Coach Tom Landry.
Johnson County High School’s street, Trojan Way, was formally renamed Herschel Walker Drive on July 4, 2017, as part of Wrightsville’s annual Fourth of July festival and parade. Walker stated in his 2008 book that he graduated top of his class and served as Beta Club president at Johnson County High School, both of which required average “A” grades.Walker’s Senate campaign website stated in December 2021 that he was the valedictorian of the entire high school, but CNN could find no proof of this. When The Atlanta Journal-Constitution enquired about a claim made on Walker’s senate campaign website in December 2021 that he had graduated from the university, the claim was removed, and Walker later acknowledged in a statement that he had left the university without receiving his degree in order to play professional football. Despite video evidence showing that Walker did indeed graduate from the university, Walker later claimed that he never said such.
At the University of Georgia, where he played football in college, Walker won the Heisman Trophy as a junior. He played for the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League for the first three years of his professional career, and in 1985, the league’s final year, he won MVP honors. Walker joined the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys after the USFL disbanded, and from 1987 to 1988, he earned back-to-back Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors. Walker was sent to the Minnesota Vikings in 1989, a transaction that is regarded as one of the most lopsided in NFL history and is thought to have helped launch the Cowboys’ dynasty in the 1990s. Later, he played for the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles before wrapping up his career with a second stint with the Cowboys. In 1999, Walker was admitted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Outside of football, Walker competed in mixed martial arts matches with Strikeforce from 2010 to 2011 and represented the United States on the bobsleigh squad in the 1992 Winter Olympics. He was a member of President Donald Trump’s President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition from 2018 to 2020. In Georgia’s 2022 Senate race, Walker ran his first political campaign and received 68% of the vote to secure the Republican nomination. In the general election, he will compete against senator Raphael Warnock of the Democratic Party.
