Bio

Openly gay American playwright and actor Harvey Fierstein is renowned for his unconventional and outrageous performances that not only amuse audiences but also make a significant point—namely, that gays and lesbians are essential elements of modern society. He was up in a typical middle-class family and achieved renown with the plays he co-wrote and starred in, the “Torch Song Trilogy.” His two renowned Tony Awards were from plays that explored the passions and relationships of a gay drag queen in the early 1980s. Even though homosexuality was still a taboo subject in those days, Fierstein had the guts and ingenuity to successfully handle it in his plays. One of the first famous people to come out was him.

In his theatrical debut, Andy Warhol’s “Pork,” in 1971, he played a lesbian cleaning woman without hesitation. He was a daredevil. He played Edna Turnblad, the mother of the main character, in the musical “Hairspray,” for which he won multiple awards as a dynamic performer. In addition to acting in plays, he has also appeared in a number of movies, including “Garbo Talks,” “Duplex,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and others. He has provided the voice for a number of characters on shows like “The Simpsons,” “Mulan,” and “Family Guy,” and is known for his gravelly accent. When he was given the part of an asthmatic lesbian in one of Andy Warhol’s few theatrical works, “Pork,” in 1971, he experienced his first major success. La Mama Experimental Theater Club in New York hosted the play’s world premiere.

He quickly started writing his own plays, and in 1972, La Mama hosted the premiere of his debut play, “International Stud.” The LGBT community enjoyed the production, which included a drag queen and told her life. In the fourth Broadway production of the musical “Fiddler on the Roof,” which debuted in 2004, he played Tevye. The play “Torch Song Trilogy”, which he both authored and starred in, is his most well-known production.

The narrative centered on Arnold, a gay drag performer looking for a family. The play is somewhat autobiographical in that Fierstein’s own hopes and failures were reflected in it. He authored the musical “La Cage aux Follesaward-winning “‘s book, which was first performed on Broadway in 1983 and then again in 2004 and 2010. The play was about a gay couple and the humorous mishaps that occur when they host conservative visitors.

In the 2002 musical “Hairspray,” he played an obese woman and quickly won over the audience’s favor. In essence, the play was a satire on the social inequities that were pervasive in America in the 1960s.In films like “Common Ground”, “Death to Smoochy”, “Duplex”, and “The Year without a Santa Claus,” he made appearances.

He penned the book for the musical “A Catered Affair” in 2007, which was based on a 1955 teleplay and a 1956 movie of the same name. He penned the script for Disney Theatrical Productions’ 2012 Broadway debut of the musical “Newsies.”He made the decision to continue his studies and enrolled at the Brooklyn-based Pratt Institute, where he graduated in 1973 with a bachelor of fine arts. He briefly taught before going back to writing and playing.

He wrote, revised, and improvised his plays throughout the 1970s, and he appeared in many of them. He composed two plays, “Widows and Children First!” and “Fugue in a Nursery,” which he later combined to create a collection of plays. He combined three of his plays—”International Stud,” “Fugue in a Nursery,” and “Widows and Children First!”—in 1982 to create the “Torch Song Trilogy,” which featured drag performer Arnold Beckoff who sang torch songs. The play gained a tonne of popularity.

In 1983, he penned the script for the musical play “La Cage aux Folles.” The 1973 French drama of the same name by Jean Poiret served as the inspiration for the book musical.

He was prominent in theatre and movies in the 1980s, appearing in supporting roles in “Garbo Talks”, “Miami Vice”, and “Tidy Endings”.He was more active in the film industry than in the theatre in the 1990s, and his films for the decade include “The Harvest,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Elmo Saves Christmas,” and “White Lies”. He played Edna Turnblad in the 2002 musical “Hairspray,” which was adapted from a 1988 John Waters film of the same name.
