Bio

American vlogger, science communicator, entrepreneur, author, online producer, and musician William Henry Green II was born on May 5, 1980. He is well-known for founding and presenting the instructional YouTube channels Crash Course and SciShow, as well as for co-founding and hosting the Vlogbrothers YouTube channel with his older brother, novelist John Green. In addition, he has promoted and coordinated social activism, launched music albums, hosted a number of other YouTube channels, and acquired a sizable TikTok following. Green was born in Birmingham, Alabama, to Mike and Sydney Green ; however, his family soon relocated to Orlando, Florida, where he was reared.  He obtained a B.S. in biochemistry from Eckerd College and an M.S. in environmental studies from the University of Montana after graduating from Winter Park High School in 1998.  “Of Both Worlds: How the Personal Computer and the Environmental Movement Change Everything” was the title of his master’s thesis. John and Hank got together with their “Nerdfighters”  in 2008. Even though there was only a three-day notice for the initial event, approximately 100 people showed up. John and Hank were invited to the Google Chicago office in August to discuss the concept.

On the same day, they crammed 400 or more young adults into the Harold Washington Library.  The brothers embarked on a national tour in November after John finished his book tour for his third book, Paper Towns. They encountered Nerdfighters at neighborhood libraries and community centers thanks to events in 17 different cities. Green’s debut album of Nerdfighter-themed songs, So Jokes, was published during this tour. As a part of the website’s Original Channel Initiative, Hank and John started the educational YouTube channel Crash Course in January 2012. The channel debuted with a series covering Biology and World History and now offers a variety of instructional programs based on high school curricula. John claims that the brothers do not intend for Crash Course to take the place of conventional classroom materials, but rather to serve as an introduction and a means of igniting children’s interest in learning. With the expectation that the channel would eventually cover the whole high school curriculum, their objective is to develop “materials that allow for more valuable interaction in the classroom”.

Initially, Hank and John hosted the channel, with Hank concentrating on the science classes and John instructing the humanities courses. Since then, the channel has grown, bringing in new hosts like Craig Benzine, Phil Plait, and Emily Graslie, and introducing new programs like astronomy, physics, and philosophy.  A distinct Crash Course: Kids channel, which is a component of YouTube Kids, was introduced in March 2015, with Sabrina Cruz serving as the host of a Science course tailored toward a younger audience. Both teachers and students have praised Crash Course.

Although the majority of its funding comes from audience contributions via Patreon, it has received funds from Bill Gates’ bgC3 and has a collaboration with PBS Digital Studios to continue generating more episodes. The Green brothers have been featured in an interview on PotterCast and have frequently delivered the keynote address at LeakyCon, a gathering of Harry Potter fans. The initial goal of the Brotherhood 2.0 project was accomplished. Compared to before the project began, the two brothers now speak more frequently and have a greater impact on one another’s life. Before Brotherhood 2.0, the brothers only spoke on the phone occasionally, but today, according to Hank’s wife Katherine, they “speak virtually every day.”  Every Tuesday and Friday, John and Hank kept uploading vlogs to their channel. They cover a wide range of themes in their films, including explanations of current events, reunions, jokes, rants, observations from various locations, Question Tuesdays, and miscellaneous topics. They had almost 1,900 videos posted as of May 22, 2021. More than 3 million people subscribe to the channel, and more than 860,000,000 people have seen its videos.

Green established and developed websites for himself and neighborhood clients throughout high school and college. Following the Mars Pathfinder Mission in 1994, his first effort, the “Mars Exploration Page,” saw some modest success. IHateI4.com, a later website, attracted coverage from neighborhood news outlets including the Orlando Sentinel. After relocating to Montana for graduate school, Green continued working as a web developer, concentrating on creating websites for educational institutions and non-profit environmental organizations. Green founded “EcoGeek,” a blog specializing in technical breakthroughs that would assist the environment, while still a graduate student.

EcoGeek began as a school assignment before becoming a significant environmental journal. Time took notice of EcoGeek and referred to it as “porn for hardcore scientific, tech, and enviro nuts.”  Green has written about environmental issues for a number of blogs, including as Treehugger.com, Yahoo! Green, The National Geographic Green Guide, Scientific American, The Weather Channel, Planet Green, NPR, and The New York Times. In the middle of the 2000s, Green co-wrote the book Mental Floss: Scatterbrained and contributed frequently to the website.

Hank co-founded the Project for Awesome, an annual online charity event, and the now-defunct conferences NerdCon: Stories, which focused on storytelling, and PodCon, which focused on podcasts with his brother John. VidCon is the largest conference in the world about online videos. He was a co-creator of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, the first web series to win an Emmy for its translation of Pride and Prejudice in the form of a video blog. Additionally, he co-founded DFTBA Records, a retailer of items, Subbable, a developer of video games, and Pemberley Digital, a firm that creates internet videos and blogs based on public domain classic literature. The online video and audio production company Complexly, of which Green is the CEO, was born from the environmental technology blog EcoGeek, which Green founded. Along with SciShow Tangents, Green also co-hosts the podcasts Dear Hank & John and Delete This with his brother and wife, respectively. An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, Green’s first book, came out on September 25, 2018, and its sequel, A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor, came out on July 7, 2020. Both books hit the New York Times Best Seller list right away.
