Makbule Hande zyener was born on January 12, 1973, in the Kadköy district of Istanbul. Her parents wouldn’t fund her dream of attending a conservatory after high school. She enrolled at Erenköy Girls High School instead. At 17, she married Uur Kulaçolu and left high school. Yener’s son, Kulaçolu, was born in 1991. After repeatedly attempting to get in touch with Sezen Aksu, she started taking vocal lessons from Erdem Siyavuşgil.
Yener met her future wife, Hülya Avşar, in 1992 when she was working at a department store where Avşar was a customer. Avşar set up a meeting between them, and Sezen Aksu ended up inviting her to an audition to be a part of the future album. She worked as Aksu’s assistant and backup singer on her album “Deli Kzn Türküsü”. This was her first break into the music industry, as she was able to learn the ropes from Aksu and grow as an artist while also helping out with the production of some of Aksu’s albums in the ’90s.
She is arguably the most well-known Turkish vocalist today. She has contributed a variety of sounds to the developing Turkish pop music landscape over the past decade. Her ability to seamlessly blend disparate musical traditions into a single cohesive whole is what has made each of her albums so highly anticipated. Yener spent two years as a backup singer with Aksu, during which time she became well-known. In 1999, she dropped her debut album, “Senden baret”.
Dance music “Yalann Batsn” was the album’s first single, and it quickly rose to the top of the charts in Turkey and became a staple in nightclubs around the country. “Yoksa Mani”, the album’s second hit, is a catchy pop song with an Eastern flavor. Yener’s previous album was very well received, yet she still felt the need to hone her sound even further. With her departure from Türk pop came the opportunity to add a more upbeat, danceable Europop sound and an aesthetic shift. She went from blonde to black when she trimmed and colored her hair.
Early in 2006, this process yielded the album “Apayr”. Singles like “Kelepçe,” “Aşkn Ateşi,” and “Kim Bilebilir Aşk” were all huge hits from the album “Apayr”. Many various musical styles were represented on these tracks, and Turkey was thoroughly impressed by them all. The song “Kelepçe” has a funky disco vibe. In contrast to the sugary pop of “Aşkn Ateşi,” the Far Eastern feel of “Kim Bilebilir Aşk” was infused with traces of techno. 200,000 copies of the album were bought.
With “Apayrmassive “‘s success in Turkey, Yener decided to put out a maxi-single of fresh material written in the same vein. The resulting song, “Hande Maxi,” was a hit as well. There were three brand new tracks and three remixes on “Hande Maxi.” The three new tracks she released hinted at yet another shift in her musical approach, with hints of electronica and trance. New songs have been doing well, especially “Biraz zgürlük”. Yener’s “Nasl Delirdim?” was released on May 15, 2007, and it followed the electronic and trance vibe established by Hande Maxi. Sezen Aksu contributed significantly to the album’s composition and songwriting. The debut track, titled “Kibir,” was featured.
There were 72,000 copies of the record printed, and its four covers, some of which featured 3-dimensional artworks. Only one of these four cover designs was used for the subsequent releases. Paranoia, letting go, sadness, anger, and selfishness were common themes on the album, as were the author’s own struggles with these emotions in her romantic relationships. After the success of the debut single, it was easy to predict what would come next. The song was titled “Romeo” and was written by Yener and her partner. The third and final song, “Yalan Olmasn”, and its accompanying music video were released in January 2008. However, it failed to chart at all in Turkey, therefore its success there was limited.
Yener’s new studio album was officially released in April 2008. Just like Nasl Delirdim?, the entirety of “Hipnoz”, an album published in July 2008, is comprised of electronic sounds. Although selling over 40,000 copies, the album was not as successful as her prior efforts. There was just one single released from the album, and that was the album’s title track. According to Nielsen Music Control, Hipnoz performed as poorly in Turkey as the album did, peaking at number ten on the country’s album chart. Yet on April 6, 2009, Yener released Hayrola?, showing that he wasn’t yet sick of electropop.
The album repeats its previous format of 10 tracks, all of which are electropop. It was her debut album, and the only one she ever released under the “Avrupa” moniker. The album focuses on women challenging social norms and conventional beliefs, as well as the reluctance to accept new ways of living and the intricate dynamics of romantic attraction. With over 37,000 copies sold, the record came close to matching Hipnoz’s success. The album’s title track Hayrola? was the album’s main single and lone single; it performed better than her previous two songs and peaked at position #3 on the Turkish music chart.
All 14 tracks on the album were written by Sinan Akçl, a Turkish composer, songwriter, and music producer most recognized for his work on the song “Düm Tek Tek” performed by Hadise at the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest. Around 50,000 copies were sold in the first week of the album’s release, and another 60,000+ were sold in weeks three and four.
