Any of a variety of prizes granted annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, situated in Beverly Hills, California, United States, to honor an accomplishment in the film business, officially known as the Academy Award of Merit (byname Oscar). The first Oscars were given in 1929, and victors are rewarded with a gold-plated statuette, which is popularly referred to as an Oscar.

Best picture, best actor, best actress, supporting actor, and supporting actress are among the 24 categories in which winners are chosen. Other categories include directing, original screenplay, adapted screenplay, cinematography, production design, editing (including original score and original song), costume design, makeup and hairstyling, sound mixing, sound editing, visual effects, foreign-language film, animated feature film, animated short, live-action short, documentary feature film, and documentary short. The academy also gives out scientific and technical awards, special achievement awards, honorary awards, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award (for excellence in producing), and the Gordon E. Sawyer Award (for technological contributions), though these are not necessarily given out on a yearly basis.

The academy also gives out the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award (for excellence in producing), and the Gordon E. Sawyer Award (for technological According to the Academy, it announced in August 2018 that it will be introducing a new yearly category for “exceptional accomplishment in popular cinema,” which would debut at the 2019 event. Despite this, the Academy chose to postpone the launch of the new category due to widespread criticism and misunderstanding.

A qualifying film must be publicly displayed for paid admission for at least one week at a commercial cinema in Los Angeles county between January 1 and midnight on December 31 of a given year in order to be considered for an award in that year. There are a few exceptions to this criterion, including foreign-language films that are submitted by their respective countries of origin and do not need to have been seen before in the United States. Unlike music awards, which require the submission of a submission form from the musical artist, documentary and short film awards have distinct qualifying rules and must be filed by the makers of the films in question.

Only members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are eligible to nominate and vote on nominees for the Academy Awards, which are presented annually. According to the Academy’s organizational structure, members are grouped into several fields of cinema production, and the candidates for each award category are selected by members of the relevant branch; for example, writers nominate writers, directors propose directors, and so on. The nominees for best picture are chosen by the whole Academy membership, which then votes to decide the winners in the majority of the competitions.

Aside from conferring worldwide recognition and respect, an Academy Award has the potential to have a significant effect on the commercial and critical success of the big winners. For example, winning the best picture award might result in a considerable rise in the box office revenues of the winning film. Greater wages, increased media exposure, and better film offers are common outcomes for performers and filmmakers who win an Academy Award.

When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was established in 1927, the awards committee was only one of the numerous committees established by the new institution. Regarding award-giving, the Academy was preoccupied with its role in labor disputes, its efforts to improve the film industry’s tarnished image, and its role as a clearinghouse for the exchange of ideas about production procedures and new technologies. As a result, the idea of award-giving was considered, but it was not immediately pursued.

Although the Academy approved the committee’s recommendations in May 1928, it was not until the following year that the Academy Awards of Merit were instituted in 12 categories: the most outstanding production; the most artistic or unique production; and achievement by an actor or by an actress in dramatic directing, in comedy directing; cinematography; art directing; engineering effects; original story writing; adaptation writing; and title writing.

The inaugural awards were given out for films that had been released between August 1, 1927, and July 31, 1928, according to the Academy. The awards were given out on May 16, 1929, in a ceremony held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, California. The nominations for candidates in all categories came from the whole membership of the academy. Afterward, five boards of judges (one from each of the academy’s founding branches—actors, writers, directors, producers, and technicians) selected the ten candidates who received the most votes in each category and cut the list of those ten contenders down to only three suggestions. The ultimate winners were chosen by a central board of judges, which was comprised of one representative from each branch.

By the time of the second annual awards presentation, held on April 3, 1930 (which recognized films released in the second half of 1928 and beginning in 1929), the number of categories had been reduced to seven, and the two main film prizes had been combined into a single award, known as best picture. Since then, the academy has continued to make periodic revisions to its rules, processes, and classification systems. Indeed, there have been so many changes over the years that the only thing that seems to have remained constant is the academy’s determination to stay adaptable and keep up with the changing landscape of the business. Among the most important modifications have been the decision in 1933 to move the qualifying term for award consideration from the previous calendar year to the calendar year and the inclusion of the supporting actor and actress categories in 1936 to the list of categories.

It was originally planned that the names of the award winners would be released to the press ahead of time, but it was decided that the information would not be released until after the awards ceremony. After a late-night newspaper report revealed who had won in an early evening issue before the ceremony, it was impossible to maintain any sense of mystery about the event, which occurred during one of the industry’s most important years. As a result, the identities of the prize winners have been kept a tightly guarded secret since then until the formal announcement at the awards event.

The Academy Awards were originally shown on television in the United States in 1953, and they have been carried on television across the world since 1969. By the late twentieth century, the ceremony had grown into a significant event that was seen by millions of people. Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, and Billy Crystal have all hosted the show at various times throughout the years. A significant portion of the event was also devoted to red-carpet interviews, with particular attention being paid to the attire of the guests. The Academy’s decision to make various adjustments to the ceremony’s broadcast in the late 2010s was prompted by a sharp decline in viewership. These included a three-hour time restriction, which will take effect in 2019, and an earlier broadcasting date, which will take effect in 2020.
