Guy Berryman Bio

Guy Berryman was born in the Scottish city of Kirkcaldy. After completing his secondary education at two independent institutions, The Edinburgh Academy in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh and Kent College in the English city of Canterbury, he went on to complete his undergraduate studies at University College London. Rupert Berryman, his father, is a Chartered Engineer who worked on the construction of the Channel Tunnel. Berryman tied the knot with Joanna Briston, his childhood sweetheart, in a low-key ceremony in the City of Westminster on July 4, 2004. Nico, the couple’s daughter, was born on September 17, 2006, and she is their only child.

Guy and Joanna Coldplay separated in March 2007 after three years of marriage and later divorced, according to a Coldplay representative in March 2007. He currently resides in the Cotswolds with his fiancee, Keshia Gerrits, and their children, Lucien and Bea, in the heart of the English countryside. Berryman is reported to have a net worth of £107 million, according to an article published by The Times in May of this year. In addition to being a marathon runner, Berryman enjoys running in the nearby parks or in and around the neighborhoods of the hotels when the band is on the road.

Besides supporting his hometown football team, Raith Rovers, he is also a photographer who enjoys fashion and technical devices. Aside from that, he owns a vintage, retro-style jukebox, which he uses to collect Motown and Stax 7″ singles, joking that he knows “every second-hand vinyl shop in every big city in the United States.” Berryman enjoys restoring old automobiles in his spare time. In 2021, he disclosed that, before doing so, he had a dream of restoring planes and learning to fly them, but that, due to the difficulty of the endeavor, he eventually became disinterested in the notion after a while.

Guy Berryman (b. April 12, 1978, Kirkcaldy, Scotland) on bass and Will Champion (b. July 31, 1978, Southampton, England), a guitarist who later moved to drums, completed the line-up of the band in the following year. Coldplay debuted in the United Kingdom’s Top 100 in 1999 with the single “Brothers & Sisters,” released on the independent Fierce Panda label before joining with major label Parlaphone in 2000.

Later that year, the band released the Blue Room EP, which received a flurry of positive feedback. You may be familiar with Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly, but how well do you know the story of the first rock opera, The Sound of Music? Examine the answers to this quiz to see how much you know about rock & roll in general. Coldplay’s full-length debut, Parachutes (2000), sold millions of copies on the strength of Martin’s voice and songs such as the heartbreaking “Yellow.” Coldplay’s second studio album, The Bends (2002), sold millions more.

Aside from the two additional Grammy Awards gained by the group for the later album, tracks such as “Clocks” contributed to the band’s overall album sales passing the 20 million milestones in 2007. X & Y (2005), Coldplay’s follow-up to the performance album Live 2003 (2003), is a compilation of guitar-driven, arena-friendly rock anthems (including the breakthrough single “Speed of Sound”) that propelled the group to the level of “major bands” such as U2 and Radiohead. Meanwhile, Martin’s marriage to American actress Gwyneth Paltrow, which lasted from 2003 to 2016, elevated him to a level of celebrity that was unrelated to his musical achievements.

Coldplay’s 2008 album, Viva la Vida, which was produced in part by Brian Eno, debuted at the top of the charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom, and the album’s title track, which is arguably the band’s most radio-friendly effort to date, peaked at the top of the charts on both sides of the pond. The band’s success was reflected at the 2009 Grammy Awards ceremony when they were recognized for their work with awards for song of the year, best rock album, and best pop performance by a group.. Coldplay’s elegant Mylo Xyloto (2011), which featured a duet between Martin and pop artist Rihanna, marked the band’s return to the studio after another collaboration with Eno.

Ghost Stories (2014), which contained the hit songs “Magic” and “A Sky Full of Stars,” A Head Full of Dreams (2015), and the EP Kaleidoscope (2016) were among the band’s subsequent albums (2017). Coldplay conducted two live-streamed concerts in Amman, Jordan, to celebrate the release of their new album Everyday Life (2019). The first event took place at sunrise, while the second concert took place at dusk. With this album, the band became the seventh artist to have an album debut at number one on the British album chart.

During the past year, Berryman has spent most of his time developing menswear in a converted barn on his estate that is all white. It also holds his cutting-edge audio equipment, as well as a collection of 1960s European sports automobiles from the 1960s. Car restoration, as well as mid-century furniture and everything related to Stanley Kubrick, are other interests of mine.

A triptych of monotype portraits he created of the late director hangs on one wall of his office, and in the garage below, next to a sleek Bizzarrini Strada sports car (designed by Enzo Ferrari’s head engineer in the early 1960s), hangs a painting by Olivier Mourgue depicting an ape meandering between an arrangement of red Djinn chairs. In the words of Berryman, “I commissioned it from the artist Susie Hamilton.” The document “brings together two important components from 2001: A Space Odyssey is a science fiction film directed by Stanley Kubrick. However, Keshia despises it, so it is confined to the garage.”

On the exterior of Berryman’s house, which was constructed from a collection of stables, there is an abundance of visually fascinating hardware. In their original form, they were part of a hunting lodge created by architect Charles Forster Hayward in 1875 for Henry Arthur Brassey, the son of a civil engineer and railway contractor who was granted a wealth worth the equivalent of £600 million by his father. The estate was one of the most technologically sophisticated in its day, with its own on-site works to supply gas illumination to the house, which was constructed from stone quarried on the estate’s grounds.

Berryman’s workshop is located in the courtyard of the old stables, where he restores his automobiles. The activity was something he began with his father when he was approximately 13 years old, he explains. “I suppose I’ve acquired everything I’ve ever been interested in, and I have enough cars to last me for the time being.” Many models are only suitable for use on the racetrack. Despite the fact that they are absolutely attractive, the skins on some of the doors are merely 2mm aluminum, which provides no protection at all.

There are several that I do drive, however. I used to do two or three road trips a year, driving down to Rome and stopping at hotels and certain restaurants along the route to visit friends in different parts of the country. “I’ve been missing that a lot during the lockdown.” Berryman’s workshop contains more spanners, ratchets, and sockets than anyone except a petrolhead could ever fathom being required (all of which is used to adjust Berryman’s prized Lancias and Citroens), as well as several incredible-looking heavy metal Diagraph stencil machines.

It was originally intended for the purpose of attaching a stencil type to cargo being transported down the Mississippi River in the late nineteenth century, but the machines eventually gained a military meaning. Consider the extremely accurate and ordered typography in the television show M*A*S*H. According to Berryman, who has employed the typefaces for print work at Applied Art Forms, “I love this typography since its form is governed by purpose.” “We know we need to develop a visual language for the brand, and I’m experimenting with the phrase ‘diminished reality for a T-shirt graphic because, if there’s one phrase that sums up the state of the world right now, I believe it is that.”

Berryman is drawn to the Diagraph method because of its tactile and mechanical aspects; he appreciates the heaviness and individuality of each punch that is manually applied. As we travel through the main house, past a Warhol silkscreen of Mick Jagger on our way to the library, where we find a 1970s Mario Bellini modular sofa and a hand-carved Victorian wooden mannequin — both industrial in character, but each completely individual — a common thread begins to emerge: So many of the things disclose their method of construction; they have a simplicity about them that belies the herculean effort that went into their creation.

Berryman’s library contains a De Coene Frères for Knoll President desk from the 1950s. Photograph by Michael Sinclair On the way, he talks about his admiration for Dieter Rams, the maestro of reductionist style who helped place Braun on the fashion map, as well as his admiration for Maison Margiela. He considers the mid-’60s to be the pinnacle of design history. “I think we’ve lost something since then,” he acknowledges. Because the lines are free-flowing and carved by hand on a 1960s Ferrari, it appears to be a sculpture when viewed from the side. “Now it’s done on a computer, and it’s constructed using carbon fiber to meet consumer expectations,” says the designer.

We take up residence in the library, with Berryman perched on an imposing 1950s President desk by De Coene Frères for Knoll, which one imagines Mussolini would have found extremely pleasant in its simplicity.. His current fixation is a rare book from Japan, which was compiled in the mid-2000s and contains late-1970s work by Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, including clothing from the duo’s Let it Rock, Sex, Seditionaries, and World’s End eras. He hopes to one day acquire the book.

Despite the fact that the book does not have an ISBN number, it is rumored to have been assembled by super-fan designers Hiroshi Fujiwara and Jun Takahashi, and it sells for £800 on the internet. “I’ve really fallen in love with this early McLaren and Westwood stuff,” says Berryman, flipping through pages that depict porn-corrupted Disney characters and other suggestive punk imagery. “I’ve really fallen in love with this early McLaren and Westwood stuff,” says Berryman. Every T-shirt is unique because each one was individually screen-printed by hand. [Gallerist] Paul Stolper, a friend of mine, has a vast collection of Seditionaries clothes, and he took me through each and every one of them, pointing out all the hidden intricacies.

From the outside, there’s a lot about the stitching that you can’t see, and when you look at the bondage shirts and pants, you can see that they predate what Helmut Lang went on to accomplish.” He sees parallels between McLaren’s work, which incorporates elements of other genres, and the work of others who have achieved success. The modern equivalent of this is Virgil Abloh, who jumps from one media to another, and in the same vein, I want everything I create to be unique. ” My goal is to have a label that I can sell in five years rather than one that I have to create. I want it to be a long-lasting business that caters to a small set of people who are passionate about the clothing.”
