Guillermo del Toro Bio

Guillermo del Toro was born on October 9, 1964. He thinks his antipathy for authority stems from his “morbid” upbringing in a Catholic household.

Since he was eight years old, he has wanted to make short dark fantasy films using his father’s Super 8 camera and his ‘Planet of the Apes toys. Around ten short films were produced by him before he graduated from high school.

It was his second triumph at the Academy Awards, and the film was nominated for thirteen awards overall. His prior work in the subgenre of dark fantasy, “Pan’s Labyrinth,” was nominated for three Oscars.

He has also directed the horror/dark fantasy flicks “Cronos,” “The Devil’s Backbone,” “Blade II,” “Hellboy,” and “Pacific Rim.” It is popularly assumed that he and Chuck Hogan co-wrote the entirety of ‘The Hobbit trilogy, as well as the books and TV show for ‘The Strain. Before becoming a director, he specialized in special effects makeup design for ten years. He is often mentioned in the same breath as fellow acclaimed Mexican filmmakers Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro G. Iárritu, who together are known as “The Three Amigos of Cinema.”

The 1993 Spanish-language Mexican horror film Cronos, directed by Guillermo del Toro, starred Federico Luppi and Ron Perlman as an antique shopkeeper and a vampire, respectively. His debut feature picture was Mexico’s entry for the 66th Academy Awards in the ‘Best Foreign Language Picture’ category, however, it did not receive a nomination. His second feature film, the American science fiction horror movie Mimic, was funded to the tune of $30 million by Miramax Films. After a disagreement with Miramax prevented him from receiving a final cut of the film, he released a director’s cut in 2011.

After trying to make it big in Hollywood, he returned to Spain to helm “The Devil’s Backbone,” a gothic horror film set during the final year of the Spanish Civil War. The film, on which he reteamed with Federico Luppi, was a critical and commercial success upon its initial release.
Blade II, his second picture, continued the horror and supernatural elements of its predecessor and starred the titular comic book character, a human-vampire hybrid. Fans of the 1998 film Blade were happy to see Wesley Snipes return to the role he made famous in the sequel.

In 2004, he and Ron Perlman teamed up to adapt another supernatural comic book, this time depicting the tale of the demon-turned-superhero Hellboy from a graphic novel published by Dark Horse Comics. He developed and directed “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” in 2008 after the commercial and critical success of his eponymous film.

Del Toro’s dark fantasy drama ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, which he wrote, produced, and filmed in his native Spanish, was released between the two Hellboy flicks. The film was hailed for its parable-like story and themes reminiscent of ‘The Devil’s Backbone,’ and it opened to widespread critical acclaim and many international honors, including three ‘Oscars’ and three ‘BAFTAs.

Peter Jackson hired him in April 2008 to direct the first two films in the live-action adaptation of The Hobbit, but the development was halted due to MGM’s financial problems. His name appears as a co-writer on all three films despite the fact that he resigned in May of 2010. The Strain, co-written by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, was published in 2009, and its success prompted the authors to write its sequels, The Fall and The Night Eternal. For a four-part FX series based on the books, he directed the pilot in 2014.

The film features enormous monsters and Jaegers, which are large mecha suits. Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, and Rinko Kikuchi starred in the film, and it was a commercial and critical success. He then collaborated with Matthew Robbins and Lucinda Cox on the screenplay for Crimson Peak, a gothic horror film starring Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, and Charlie Hunnam. The film premiered in October 2015, in time for Halloween, and received positive reviews. The Shape of Water, starring Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, and Michael Shannon, began filming in Toronto in August of 2016 for a scheduled three weeks. With its characteristic dark fantasy themes, the August 2017 release was a commercial and critical success, winning four Academy Award nominations and two wins, including Best Picture and Best Director.

‘Trollhunters’ was originally released by his production company and Disney at the D23 Expo in 2009, but he moved the project to DreamWorks in late 2010. Season one became Netflix’s most-watched kids’ original ever after its worldwide release on the service on December 23, 2016. Two of Guillermo del Toro’s most acclaimed movies, “The Devil’s Backbone” and “Pan’s Labyrinth,” are set in Franco’s Spain. His worldwide triumph with “Pan’s Labyrinth,” which made $80 million and was one of the highest-grossing foreign movies in the United States, earned him a great deal of respect.

While attending the Instituto de Ciencias in Guadalajara, Guillermo del Toro began dating Lorenza Newton, a cousin of the famed Mexican singer Guadalupe Pineda. They hitched the wedding and had two children together, but they split in September 2017.
