Gretchen Mol was born in Deep River, Connecticut, on November 8, 1972, to a school administrator and his artist wife. She grew up in Deep River and attended Deep River High School. New York City is a short commute away from Deep River, which is located on the Chester Bowles Highway (Route 9), nine miles northwest of Old Saybrook (home of the famed Katharine Hepburn) and within striking distance of the city. She was inspired to pursue performing as a child and participated in high school productions before relocating to New York City as a teenager to pursue acting and musical theatre studies at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy and the William Esper Studio, among other institutions.
Despite being only 5’6″ tall, which made her ineligible for a traditional modeling career, her distinctive attractiveness helped her land modeling gigs while she followed her dream of being a professional actor in Hollywood. Beginning in 1994, she began appearing in magazines while also working at well-established Manhattan occupations such as hat-check lady at a restaurant. An agent came upon her while she was on the job and signed her to a contract. Her first acting gig, in a Coca-Cola television commercial, was secured through her agent.
She proceeded to refine her acting skills in summer stock, where she appeared in musicals such as “Bus Stop,” “No Exit,” and “Godspell,” among others. When Gretchen was 23 years old, she made her feature film debut in Spike Lee’s Girl 6 (1996), a small role that came her way by chance after she had gone for an audition for the television soap opera Guiding Light (1952). It was at this period that her career began to take off, as she appeared in modest roles, primarily “girlfriend” roles, in films such as Rounders (1998), in which she co-starred with “Matt Damon” (Cav), and Celebrity (1998), in which she co-starred with Kenneth Branagh and Leonardo DiCaprio.
“Vanity Fair” magazine featured Gretchen on its cover in September 1998, and the magazine dubbed her “the Next Big Thing.” So far, her most well-known role has been in Donnie Brasco (1997), a minor cult classic best known for the performances of Al Pacino, Johnny Depp, and Anne Heche, amongst other notable actors. In spite of this, her attractiveness and presence prompted “Vanity Fair” to publicize the stunning blonde, heralding the coming of a significant new star. She appeared to be on the verge of making the jump to starring roles, but the announcement turned out to be premature. Angelina Jolie, a brunette, has proven to be Hollywood’s newest “it” girl.
“Vanity Fair” cover story Mol continued to appear in films and on stage for the next seven years, including the role of Jennie in Neil LaBute’s “The Shape of Things,” which she performed in both the London and New York productions (she also appeared in the film adaptation, The Shape of Things (2003)). The positive feedback she received demonstrated that she was more than simply a gorgeous face. “Chicago” on Broadway in 2004 gave her the opportunity to show off her singing and dancing abilities as Roxie Hart.
In the following years, she continued to work steadily, landing another tiny role in Woody Allen’s Sweet and Lowdown (1999), and eventually landed the lead role in the David E. Kelley television series Girls Club (2002). The series, on the other hand, was a failure and was canceled after only two episodes. Nonetheless, the time that had passed allowed her to further her career as an actress. When the brunette 1950s “stag queen” Bettie Page appeared in The Notorious Bettie Page in 2004, the blonde beauty had finally landed the role that would prove to be her big break in the acting world (2005).
Many brunettes have gone blonde, but Mol—the blonde who went brunette—made a statement on the big screen with her appearance. Her portrayal of the iconic Page received overwhelmingly positive reviews, propelling the film to the stature of an art-house success. Mol married film director Tod Williams on June 1, 2004, and the couple became parents a little more than three years later, on October 10, 2007, when their son, Ptolemy John Williams, was born. She was working as a hat-check lady at a restaurant when her soon-to-be agent spotted her and arranged for her to appear in a Coca-Cola advertisement.
Both her mother and father work at RHAM High School, where her father teaches special education. The divorce between her parents occurred when she was a child. Jim Mol, her older brother, is a musician. Graduated from the esteemed American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. Among those who went were Lee Tergesen (Oz 1997), Tyne Daly (Judging Amy 1998), and Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas 1998), among many others.
Peter Lockyer, the Broadway actor, attended the same high school as me. I grew raised in the state of Connecticut. As a youngster, she relocated to New York to pursue a career in acting. The actress has collaborated with her husband’s ex-wife (Famke Janssen) on three films, two of which were released prior to her marriage to him, the other of which was released following her marriage, The Ten (2007). Ptolemy John Williams, born on October 10, 2007, is the Williams family’s first child.
She and her husband, Tod Williams, are expecting their second child. Winter Morgan Williams, Williams’ second son, was born on February 17, 2011, in New York City. Additionally, Gretchen and Lee Tergesen attended the same high school (Valley Regional High School in Deep River, Connecticut), which Gretchen graduated from with Lee Tergesen. Gretchen and Lee Tergesen are also alumni of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. In addition to Justin Haut and Peter Lockyer, other prominent Valley graduates include: She has Dutch (by her paternal grandfather), English, French, Welsh, and Irish ancestry in addition to other nationalities.
She is a direct descendant on her mother’s side (Morgan) of William Brewster, a major elder of the Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower, and Cornwall-born Captain James Avery, Commander of the Pequot Indians, both of whom were born in Cornwall. Gretchen’s family came to the United States aboard the Mayflower and settled in the Stonington, Connecticut, area shortly after. “Hollywood’s next It Girl” was the title of the September 1998 issue of Vanity Fair magazine, which featured her on the cover. Her name was given to a character in the film Mary (2005), which was inspired by her.
Mol collaborated with the film’s director, Abel Ferrara, on three films: The Funeral (1996), SUBWAYStories: Tales from the Underground (1997), and New Rose Hotel (1998). The Funeral was Mol’s first collaboration with Ferrara (1998). I wish I could say I have some sort of grand plan, but for the time being, so much of it depends on what comes my way, and then you simply say, “There’s something about that job that tickles my fancy or feels appropriate.” With the exception of knowing when I think something is exploitative and when I think it’s beautiful, I’ve never really had a problem with nudity in films at its most basic level.
The Notorious Bettie Page (2005) is based on Bettie Page’s black-and-white “loops” from the 1940s and 1950s, which she watched in order to understand her character. I really like the loops! I couldn’t seem to take my gaze away from them. It was five minutes dedicated to the art of the shoe and the process of putting the shoe on—but first, the stocking had to be removed. It had a geisha vibe to it. There was something about the way it was presented. Bettie was just completely lost in her own world, dancing around in her fringe bikini and staring at the strange lamp on the side table, which she had brought with her.
Gretchen Mol, who starred in HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” has joined Jon Bernthal in the Showtime pilot “American Gigolo.” According to Deadline, the series is a modern remake of the 1980 noir classic, which starred Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton, among others. As Julian Kaye (Bernthal), the protagonist of the potential series will be introduced 18 years after he was arrested for murder and is struggling to find his footing in today’s Los Angeles sex industry while seeking the truth about the setup that sent him to prison all those years ago and hoping to reconnect with Michelle (Mol), his one true love. David Hollander, the showrunner of “Ray Donovan,” is in charge of directing the project. Bernthal will also be listed as a producer on the film.
A modern re-imagining of the film will be executive produced by veteran Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who was involved in the original film’s production and financing. Mol’s recent small-screen credits include “Perry Mason” and “Yellowstone,” both of which were directed by Mol. Her next appearance will be in the film “False Positive,” which will be released later this year. ‘Boardwalk Empire’ actress Gretchen Mol has been cast as the female protagonist opposite Jon Bernthal in Showtime’s pilot American Gigolo, a remake of the 1980 film noir classic starring Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton.
The series American Gigolo, written and directed by Hollander, is a contemporary remake of the classic film of the same name. As Julian Kaye, Bernthal will portray a man who is introduced 18 years after he was arrested for murder and is now struggling to find his way in the Los Angeles sex industry while searching for answers about the conspiracy that sent him to prison all those years ago and hoping to reconnect with Michelle (Mol), who was his one true love during his time in prison. The parts of Julian and Michelle were performed by Gere and Hutton, respectively, in the motion picture.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who was also responsible for the first picture, serves as executive producer alongside Hollander, Jonathan Littman, and KristieAnne Reed, among others. Bernthal is also a producer in addition to acting. The project is a production of Paramount Television Studios and is currently under development.
Aside from Boardwalk Empire, for which Mol and her co-stars were nominated for two consecutive SAG Awards for drama ensemble in 2011 and 2012, Mol’s recent television credits include Perry Mason, The Twilight Zone, Nightflyers, and Yellowstone. Mol is a native of New York City. On theatre, she most recently appeared in Disgraced, which was just staged on Broadway. False Positive is her next feature film appearance, which will be released in 2019. ICM Partners and John Carrabino Management represent Mol in this matter.
