Gretchen Hoyt Corbett is a well-known American actress as well as a theater director. She was born on August 13, 1945. She is best recognized for her performances on television, most notably as the attorney Beth Davenport on the NBC series The Rockford Files. Despite this, she has also had a fruitful career as an actor on stage, both on Broadway and in smaller theaters across the country. Her most notable appearance was on The Rockford Files.

Her early childhood was spent at Camp Sherman and Portland, where she received her education at the Catlin Gabel School. She was born in Oregon and is the great-great-granddaughter of Henry W. Corbett, who served as a senator for Oregon in the United States Senate. Before making her stage debut in a production of Othello at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Corbett earned her bachelor’s degree in drama from Carnegie Mellon University.

After that, she went on to play leading parts on Broadway, starring opposite Julie Harris in productions such as After the Rain (1967) and Forty Carats (1968). After completing the first year of her theater studies at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Tech (before the school merged with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research to establish Carnegie Mellon University in 1967), she decided to pursue a career as an actor full-time rather than continuing her education.

In 1966, Corbett made her first appearance on stage at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in a performance of Othello in which she portrayed Desdemona. After that, she began making appearances in performances with the New Orleans Repertory Theater in the year 1967. During the same year, she was selected to play the role of Sonya Banks in the Broadway production of After the Rain, which starred Alec McCowen.

In 1968, she made her debut in the play The Bench at the Gramercy Arts Theatre. The following year, she played the title role in Iphigenia in Aulis at the Circle in the Square Theatre, which she performed against Irene Papas. After that, she appeared alongside Julie Harris in the Broadway production of Forty Carats, which was staged at the Morosco Theatre.

One of the first parts that John Corbett played on television was in the short-lived police detective show N.Y.P.D., which aired on ABC in 1968.
