Greg Adams is an American musician who plays the trumpet and flugelhorn and also arranges music. He is probably best known for his work as a member of the band Tower of Power. Adams spent his childhood in the San Francisco Bay Area, and by the time he entered his senior year at Westmoor High School in Daly City, he had already garnered a reputation for being a musical prodigy.
He had intended to enroll in the Berklee School of Music in Boston, but he instead decided to accept an invitation to join Tower of Power for the recording of their first album, which was titled East Bay Grease and was released in 1970. Adams has collaborated in the recording studio with a variety of musicians, such as Chicago, Heart, Elton John, Huey Lewis and the News, Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt, and Carlos Santana, and has also arranged music for other artists.
In 1989, he was considered for an Emmy Award, along with Paul Shaffer, for the arrangements that he had made for the seventh-anniversary special of Late Night with David Letterman. At the high school, he attended in the Bay Area, he was a freshman when he was awarded the first trumpet chair, and by the time he was a junior, he was writing arrangements for a variety of school ensembles.
After graduating from high school, he joined Tower of Power and almost immediately began playing a significant part in developing the signature horn sound of the band. Hidden Agenda, Adams’ first solo effort, which was released in 1995 on Epic Records, established him as a significant builder of the new “smooth jazz” style.
Additionally, a single from the album, a rendition of Sade’s “Smooth Operator,” remains a virtual template for the genre to this day. In 2002, Adams released his second studio album, titled Midnight Morning, on his own record label, Ripa Records.
The success of tunes such as “Roadhouse” persuaded the renowned jazz label Blue Note to purchase the record for distribution. Adams’ muted trumpet style is a mix of gentle jazz and R&B rhythms, and it is all done with a cool, sexy ambiance.
This style has made him a sought-after session player and arranger, and he has worked with a wide variety of artists, such as Santana, Madonna, Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, the Rolling Stones, Lyle Lovett, and Quincy Jones, amongst many others.
Additionally, he has composed the musical scores for a few films, including Mask and Top Gun, among others. Firefly, his third self-titled solo effort, was issued by 215 Records in the year 2004.
